I have typed in a few details into the quote of Your post. These were found by right-clicking the file and choosing Properties > Version > File Version - Value:

As I understand the article, several versions of each file are included in the hotfix and the installer chooses a specific one depending on a number of factors. In this case, the installer choose the version with _sp2_ gdr in the version description and the other one was left in the $hf_mig$ folder.

I don't think the "left overs" have anything to do with an uninstall. They are new versions and not in an $NtUninstall...$ folder. They are probably safe to delete but I will leave mine alone for a while longer since I don't know exactly why they are there.

The same file was also substituted for the old one in dllcache but in SPF, it wasn't and shouldn't.

All urlmon.dll on my system are 602,624 bytes which differs from Your files and the time stamps too. Different systems > different files, I have SP2 slipstreamed > You haven't.

Thanks for the further insight. It's a tangled web indeed!

I'll keep on deleting mine as the come. I'm guessing the purpose of the folder is to hold files that may be needed under different scenarios of uninstall actions. I don't intend to use the MS uninstall for ANY of my SP's or Hotfixes ever so if I'm right I'll never miss them. If I'm wrong, I have loads of backup images to select from that go back prior to XP SP2 and IE6 SP2 so I'll be fairly safe.

    Time will tell.

I don't mind being wrong or making a mistake occasionally. I learn more that way and maintain a healthy interest in what's going on in the system. I try to stay safe with good 'n plenty backups. So far so good. :)

    Best regards.

I adhere to the same strategy! I too, have several Ghost Images and that makes me kind of fearless and has definitely increased my learning curve. The registry comes to mind in this respect ...... ...... !
