Avid user of Karen's Replicator. When backingup Mozilla I prefer NOT to backup the contents of the "Cache" folder. Replicator has a white/black list filter option. Unless I'm looking at things wrong, there are two problems. Mozilla maintains the "frequently visited webpages" in "Cache folder" as files with NO file extension. Replicator filter option manages files USING the file extension. Am I looking at this wrong? If not, anyone have a solution how NOT to include the contents of the "Cache' folder in backups? Currently I manually delete the files prior to do the backup, which most of the time I forget to do. So I end up doing the backup a second time. Mozilla does not have a option to delete the contents at program close. I assume I could find a 3rd party, but having cache files available does speed up browsing activity. I clear the file when I backup, which is once a week... prefer Replicator excludes them.

Suggest you email Karen on this - I find Replicator very useful for auto back up to another drive, but never did get to grips with the file filter!!

    Thanks Pete

A few months ago I sent her an email with above question... received no response. Can send another, hopefully she will have time to respond. We can't bend her ear very hard for what were paying for the program. If program provided a "folder" exclusion, this would resolve the problem.

If your looking for "extremely robust" backup / synchronise program check out freeware SyncBack v3
I downloaded the "zip install" for easy install / uninstall.
This program has a boatload of features. The features I will be checking out will be "auto program close" and "sub-folder" exclusions... hoping both of these features will manage "active file/can't backup" and filter via file or folder exclusions.
When you first load, it will ask for a "profile name ". Which is the name you want to call the backup / sync routine you want to create. From there you can choose "simply or advance/expert" views to select the options you wish to have. Features include local, network, and FTP source / destination processing. It also provides a forum for support. In addition it provides a built in "Help" feature which provides a wealth of user info.. a welcome feature rarely seen in freeware.

Thanks for that, Dennis. It seems to come well recommended - not that I recognise any of the 'recommender's' !

Will run it alongside Karen's Replicator for a while. One advantage of K's Rep is that it can be set to retain files that have been deleted from the drive being backed up. SyncBack downloading as I type - no doubt it will do the same if required.

Keep us posted per usefulness / friendliness. With XP in shop, my network consists of one w98, not much of a testing platform per network backup.

I never have tried filtering either. I just point all my important stuff to my documents and back that up to an external drive. I use IE and the only important stuff is my favorites and cookies. Outlook 2002 backs up to there also. I looked at the filtering and got confused.

I've set up SyncBack to effectively mirror my Data partition to another partition - on another HD, every hour (for starters). Seems friendly enough so far, but I think I will pass on 'auto program close' for the time being. No filters either - as yet, just plain and simple!

Thanks for the update PeteC. Keeping it simple is a wise man's approach. Like with all new toys, finding function in the glitter is always the challenge. Curious to see resource load for mirror process. Like I said, I'm dead in the water for network testing. Be very kind if you can share an update once or twice a week.
    Thanks
    Dennis

First thing I discovered this morning was that Task Scheduler was not running the app. Eventually found the problem to be that the account I use had no password. Got that sorted and SyncBack is now trundling along quite happilly mirroring the drive every 10 mins - will increase that later on.

Sorted out the folder exclusions (filtering) to exclude Recyclers, Wutemp and the like, but although System Volume Information is also excluded SyncBack appears to ignore the filter - no matter as it can't access the folder anyway - and System Restore is turned off on that drive.

Resources about 1.1 Mb - Karen is taking nearly 2 Mb, but with 1.5 Gig on board I shan't lose any sleep over that.

The advantage - so far, over Karen seems to be the ability to exclude folders - unless I missed that in KR.

    Thank you very much Pete.
You have been very kind testing and sharing the results for this program ... much appreciated. Officially get my computer from shop Monday.. one day short of a month!!
Will be interesting if I can get "auto terminate program" to function on a "quick start" option being used. Some of the source files for backup are held active via that feature. Again Pete, thank you for sharing your time.

    You're welcome!

One point I missed at first is that there is no need to start SynchBack with Windows - it starts with Task Scheduler as and when required. So the resources are virtually nil - average run time is only a matter of seconds with the scheduler set to hourly intervals.

BTW it seems a good idea to set up the log so that it opens when you double click on a/the Profile.

    Yo Pete

Have my XP / w98 network back on line and enjoying SyncBack v3.. truely a remarkly program for the price. You may want to watch the "copy" option. I "assume" it's use when you want the same backup process, just assign new source / destination. When I reviewed a copied profile, one of the backup preferences was not assigned.. don't have a clue why. Thanks for the "double click" check log, is handy. Have to post at Mozilla forum, getting a file lock / no copy with program closed ... but "quick launch" is active. Not sure if SyncBack v3 can terminate. Simplier to exclude the file if not required / vital.
Am having one problem, will not let me schedule task. I get error message "A scheduled task could not be created ". Checked XP services, listed as "automatic and running ".

Still no go with "schedule ". XP services are running, username and password are available. When I make the request, SyncBack errors out and says not available. There is a option to run auto-backup profiles with program loaded, which does work. Any options in the program, if taken, would cause the XP schedule function not be available? I could understand if my backup profile over the network having a conflict between different OS's and password/username. But I can't get the local backup profile to work. I want to say it's a XP schedule services problem, but don't have a clue what it could be. If the service is running, OS has a username/non-blank password, is there anything within the service which must be set?

Have you entered the password when setting up the schedule?
