As in Start>Help>Troubleshoot Network(and other troubleshooters). I can get to the Help and display the selected troubleshooter and it will display the troubleshooter but when I click a radio button to describe the problem, no page will come up in any troubleshooter. Can it be reinstalled of fixed?

    TIA

Thanks Tony. Checked the updates and have all but a couple not needed and ran the IE repair but all troubleshooters in Windows help still blank (fail to proceed after I click the most likely problem.)

Point taken Goddez! :D And as you saw this was way back in 2002 and who could expect an OF like me to remember back longer than this morning? It felt familiar (deja vu) but it rang no bells (oldtimers) so thank you kindly for helping an aging oldtimer. BTW, I haven't gone to the link yet as I had to post this first to thank you for your gentle kindness. :D

Your most welcome bobmc32. I'd feel a lot better though if the suggestion works. Your thanks may be a bit premature but my fingers are crossed for you. :)

Goddez - Yes, you were right........premature. :( After thanking you last night I had to shut down due to some welcome t'storms but have performed two sessions of attempting to fix today. I tried the first suggestion by the MVP of "reinstall tshoot.inf (two or more times) , no help. I d'l his batch file or app. (two or more times), no help. I went to the MS site mentioned where the update fix from MS and is and downloaded (two or more times), no help. Then I went back to the 2002 thread and tried Bret's last post and still no help. S'funny, it worked then but not now. That's were it stands now. I'm willing to try further suggestions if any are forthcoming (if I'm capable).

The kitchen sink must be in this post somewhere.....that reg patch looks interesting. I love those things. :)

This is the direct link to a site to download win98_ts_fix.zip. It is expalined as a small application which will run the Trouble Shooters by disabling the [activex restriction] registry fix only while you have the Trouble Shooter open. As well, it uses it's own call to the file and that is not something that would be easy for an attacker to exploit.

For the explanation of the above applet, in the witers own word's:

Pick your flavor...I'll be back with comments in a bit. I have a grandchild pulling on my arm waiting for the ham sandwich I promised to make him.. :)

I was back and am gone again...poof!

Ah, I think you edited while I wasn't looking. I tried most and none worked and as one of the posters in one of your links said "I think I'll use online troubleshooters" cause it seems to not be worth following up further but I do appreciate your time and your links. The Windows help never did help a lot, IMO. Thank you Goddez (Anne). :)

bobmc32--I'll be honest. Am in a rush and did not read all the preceding that carefully. But there was a security problem with Help about a year and half ago. MS issued a fix, which then messed up Help. A fix for the fix was issued

Thanks Jim. And Goddez. I had d/l that before but did so again just for kicks and still the same. I think I have about wasted enuf of your collective brain power and time and think I'll do what one of Goddez' thread did with the problem and just use online troubleshooters. I'll have to agree with someone who said they weren't too much help anyway.........at least for me. It was just a small challenge which beat me...........

    Sorry bob,

As much as we seem to beating this dead horse if you hate to let windows win this battle and if in your spare time you may wish to do a "file find" and check what versions of these files you currently have:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822989

Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition
Date Time Version Size File name
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    10-Jun-2002 17:56 5.2.3644.0 10,752 %Windir%\Hh.exe
    16-Dec-2002 18:10 5.2.3735.0 516,192 %Windir%\System\Hhctrl.ocx
    20-May-2002 16:09 5.2.3635.0 88,064 Hhctrlui.dll
    10-Jun-2002 17:56 5.2.3644.0 37,888 %Windir%\System\Hhsetup.dll
    10-Jun-2002 17:56 5.2.3644.0 143,872 %Windir%\System\Itircl.dll
    10-Jun-2002 17:56 5.2.3644.0 122,368 %Windir%\System\Itss.dll

You need not respond as I am unsure of exactly who is the bigger nuisance to you now, The win98 Troubleshooters or the Help=net board members Troubleshooters. :) :D :) I made myself giggle...

Goddez (Ann) - I didn't want you to think I have forgotten your efforts nor the problem. I've been pecking away at it as time permits and must have downloaded that last suggested MS update 4 or 5 times now. Ran Belarc and it told me I had 3 MS updates that needed to be reinstalled(altho I doubt that was true ). I did. Still the same ole results with Windows help. No progress to this point. :(

    Re-Install Windows Help Troubleshooters

    RE-INSTALL TROUBLESHOOTERS

THIS CONCERNS WIN HELP FILE LOCATED IN C:\WINDOWS\HELP. WHENEVER I RUN THE HARDWARE TROUBLESHOOTERS AND PICK OUT A DEVICE TO CHECK SOMETIMES THE HELP FOR THAT DEVICE DOES NOT APPEAR WHEN I CLICK ON IT.? CAN I RE-INSTALL FROM THE WINDOW'S CD?

Two separate Windows Update criticals took your Troubleshooters away, for security reasons. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q188867 Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article contains a link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help Troubleshooters... http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot That's it. But, here is how to get them back when offline...

First, "START, Find, F&F, Tshoot.inf "; R-Clk it & select "Install ". If you still don't have the Troubleshooters...

    (1) "START, Run, RegEdit "
    (2) Navigate to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}

    Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024) <<Dword value 400 by

    (a) Clicking plus signs, beginning with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ",
    (b) & ending with "ActiveX Compatibility ".
    (c) Finally, click "{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}" itself in the left pane.
    (d) Now, you see "Compatibility Flags 0x00000400 (1024)" in the right pane.
    (e) "Registry menu, Export Registry file ".

This will create a ".reg" file of the entire Key that is open... all the items in the right pane & all sub-keys in the left pane (if there is a plus sign). Give it a name & location of your choosing, even to the Desktop or My Documents. Then, to undo the following, you will be able to simply click that file, to Merge it's contents back into the Registry.

Actually-- name that one "NoTrouble.reg ". It will look like... ...

    .Start..... REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
    "Compatibility Flags "=dword:00000400

    ....End.......

    (f) Close RegEdit. You now have an "undo" .reg, named "NoTrouble.reg ".
    (g) Make a copy of it called "Trouble.reg ".
    (h) Open "Trouble.reg" in Notepad. Change the "dword" to look as follows... all zeros... ....Start..of "Trouble.reg "...
    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{4B106874-DD36-11D0-8B44-00A024DD9EFF}]
    "Compatibility Flags "=dword:00000000

    ....End.......

CAREFUL: That "HKEY" is one line, with TWO spaces only. One between "Internet Explorer ", & the other between "ActiveX Compatibility ". Make sure it looks that way in Notepad, before you click to Save. Also, you must have an empty line at bottom.

Now, "Trouble.reg" gives you the Troubleshooters. "NoTrouble.reg" will give you security by taking them away. Remember to undo it, after you are done looking at the Troubleshooters.

    (2) By default, when a ".reg" is clicked, it will Merge into the Registry. To alter the default behavior: "START, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab ". Scroll to & click "Registration Entries ", click the "Edit" button, select "edit" in the window & click the "Set Default" button. Now, when you click a ".reg" file, it will open in Notepad for examination. To merge it into the Registry, R-Clk it & select "Merge ".
