In your start menu, right click on the shortcut to windows explorer and choose copy. Then right click on your desktop and choose paste. Now, right click on the new shortcut and choose properties. Where it says target, add a space and then /e,c:\ . It should look like this when you're done.

    %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,c:\

    Click apply and then ok.

Glad I could help. I've always kept a similar shortcut in my Quick Launch bar. Never did like the way Windows Explorer opened by default in XP nor having to drill through the start menu to get at it. It's kind of nice to have one in the Quick Launch bar. Don't have to go to the desktop when you have a bunch of windows open. It's always available. ;)

Right Click on Windows Explorer and "Send to " Desktop from the all programs, accessories... To make a shortcut for most places in Windows Explorer, just right click on the desired place on the left panel and "Send to" desktop. Drag down to Quick Launch if desired. WinKey e is handy, but opens up "My Docs" by default.

    Johanna

Zander, my WE icon is in between "Start" and "Show Desktop ", and I would be lost without it.

You and me both! I suppose I would get by if I didn't have the shortcut but I think I'd be totally lost without the quicklaunch toolbar itself. I use it more than the start menu or desktop shortcuts (don't have many of the latter). In my opinion, the toolbar options were one of the better additions to windows over the years.

Interesting. On the PC I'm using at work (right now) Winkey E (or e) opens a WE window but nothing expanded except My Computer to show all the drives and such. XP-pro SP1 and patches.

Odd; mine works the same as Newt's. Perhaps Johanna's is just the female version (non conformist, has a mind of it' own, thinks it knows best, etc. ,etc. , etc.) :p

When I go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer and right click all I get is a flash on the screen but no box shows up to send to Desktop.

Also, When I hit the Win-Key & E-Key on the keyboard, I get nothing.

Can someone tell me why this does not work for me.

I was able to get a shortcut on my Desktop by going to the Windows folder and right clicking on the explorer.exe file. I still do not know why the other way would not work for me.

Zander - good call - hehehe - fortunately, she's one of the few that can laugh it off - (doesn't change the general premise though). hehehe ........

As far as living out of quick launch - me too. And have made special program groups with short cut icons residing (hidden) on quick launch so i can hit the chevrons and go for instance to a self made folder, PC Tools - one click and there are all of my most often used utilities. Have several groups (reside in my start menu program group with shortcut copy to desktop and then moved to quick launch) and it sure makes things simple.

    ;)

Hoo, boy, I wouldn't go there! My Winkey + E also works the same as Newt's and Zander's. BTW, I have a WE window open all the time, as I do much of what passes for "work" :))) on my computer from within WE.

Just another example of how different users use Windows differently. When I first came to the PC and Win95, the QL bar was one of the first things I deactivated, and I've never found any compelling reason to start using it. For me, it just takes up space on the Taskbar, and there's nothing I can do from it that I can't do from the Start menu.

My Start menu is highly customized, and nothing remains in the Programs folder for more than a few minutes after the installation of a new program. Even though I use the Windows Classic look, many users of XP's default Luna look probably aren't aware that they, too, can use the Classic Start menu. It's MUCH easier to use, and customize, than XP's default; it can be nested as deeply as necessary (or as you like), but it's easy to move or copy icons for frequently used programs, utilities, or games to the first or second levels of the menu.

Okay, everybody have a good laugh, here. My WinKey +e will NOT open anything at all at this moment, and I do not know WHY. All of the other WK functions seem normal, on both keys of the keyboard, but Winkey +e is NOT working, period. I have no idea how or when I lost it- like I said earlier, I have a QL icon (several, actually) to take me to wherever in the file tree I want to go. If it ever exercises its feminine prerogative to come back, I will let you know how it opens. It may open the way you all describe, I can't remember, but I THOUGHT it was to My Docs. That doesn't mean I am right, or that I will ever figure out how to fix my (broken?) WinKey. Knowing me, I will break and repair ten other things on my way to FIX something I don't even USE!!! If anyone has a suggestion, I'd love to hear it!

    Absolutely.

I keep Irfanview on quicklaunch since I frequently do screen captures using alt-prtscrn or ctrl-prtscrn and then pop them into Irfanview for cropping, etc. Much less hassle to have it single click from quick launch.

I have started using the 'block flash' feature of spywareblaster and when there is a flash page I want to play, easy enough to open the app and uncheck the block.

Since both the above are things where I need a window for only a short time but may need it every few minutes, quick launch is ideal. And since it's already there, I put a couple of things in (browser and email) that otherwise I probably wouldn't bother with. I do find that I may need varying numbers of browser windows open when on this forum so I can do multiple searches and quick launch is just a dead easy way to fire up a new window.

I hope I do not have to quit laughing yet, I am still enjoying it. :D

I found that when I created a shortcut from explorer.exe in the windows folder that it opened to My Documents until I changed it to open to C:. So it may be that the Winkey+e opens that file, My Winkey+e also does nothing. It appears that windows explorer can be launched from different places and open different files.

Sounds as though you must still be using IE. :)

Time to graduate to tabbed browsing, Newt. Personally, I use Mozilla Firefox, but the feature is also available in the Mozilla suite's browser and, I believe, Opera. If you'd prefer to stay with IE, you might try SlimBrowser, which also offers tabbed browsing.

Just in case you don't know what I'm talking about, rather than opening multiple browser windows, which quickly clog the Taskbar, a tabbed browser opens new web pages on tabs (which look just like normal windows) within a single window. Multiple tabs are much easier to keep track of than multiple windows.

From WE, you can right click on just about anything and use "send to desktop" to make a shortcut. Then you can drag it to Quick Launch, or put it in a folder or drop down utility menu. I open WE with icons directly to both partitions, my Pics and my MP3s- for me, it's just easier to navigate through my file tree by opening relatively near where I want to be. My file tree resembles my purse and desk- everything is there, you just can't always immediately find it!

I wonder why our WinKeys quit working with Win Ex? I have been looking around on the net, and found one possible fix, a Doug Knox vbs for enabling WinKey, and I found a proggie that allows you to completely customize Winkey, but neither one, of course, fixed my Winkey+ e shortcut to WE. Some of my WinKey functions are fine, so it's not the ps/2 MS kb I'm using.

At last resort, of course, RTFM. Went straight to Kellys-Korner. Mustn't be a problem, because it isn't listed. Found nothing relevant in the MS KB. So,  I guess we live with it?? I use a lot of kb short cuts, but the only WinKey combo I use daily and care about is WK + L (lock). I have little kids!

    Johanna
I'll bet one of the women on this BBS tells me how to fix this before you other clowns! Daizy? Miz? Goddez (Ann) ? Maggie? C'mon, ladies, I'm having to defend our entire gender alone, here! :)

    Luna Lass,

You didn't mention having tried a System Restore. It could do the trick for you (depending, of course, how long you've been without li'l Winkey).

I know it's not much solace, since yours doesn't work right now, but at least you HAVE a WinKey ... I'm typing this on my laptop, and I don't have one ... IBM has never seen fit to include one on the keyboard.
