    Afternoon folks.

A mate of mind bought a pci usb card the other day but we couldnt get it to work. After installing the card into the pc we started window98, got a popup box saying something like, we found a new hardware device, would you like to install the driver. So we click through menu thing and get asked to restart window which we do. The next time we start windows the usb card is once more found by windows and it wants us to install the drivers (again). Next time we start the computer we get the same question again, so I click cancel and goto device manager, the usb device has a exclamtion mark (I think) infront of it and error code 10.

Have tryed switching the pci card to another slot which didnt help.

Have also started windows in safe mode, removed all usb related device and tryed to reinstall the driver.

    No luck.

    Would appreciate any help.

There are three ways to install the drivers.

Use the disk that came with the card.

Use the drivers that win 98 has as part of the operating system.

Or, go to the manufacturers web site and download the drivers.

In Device manager did you go to the exclamation point and try to update the drivers?

You most likely will have to enable USB in your BIOS first and then install the drivers again.
    Worth a look

hawk22 : Since the computer came without any usb do you really think there is an option in the bios to enable it ? (Dont have computer infront of me to check)

Have tryed both the drivers that came with the device, the windows drivers and drivers from the website.. nothing seems to work.

Btw, what does error code 10 in device manager mean ?

    laasunde, hi
If your motherboard has a pin or header for a USB connection then it will.
Error code 10 sorry don't know.
I am just going by my own experience when I installed my USB I could not get it to work reason was I hat not enabled USB in my BIOS as soon as I did I reinstalled the MS drivers and Bingo no more probs. No harm in looking.
    good luck

    USB Problems

I can not get my USB ports to work properly. Each time I plug in a USB product it will not install completely. Each time I plug in my Belkin 4 port USB hub I immediately get the dreaded Blue Screen. Fatal exception OE in VXD 4 hcd (01).
I have ran every test in the books and can not find out why it will not work.
I run Win 98SE, Dell pentIII, 512 mg ram.
Maybe you can e-mail me if you have the answer.
    cans62@yahoo.com.
    thank you

The USB IS enabled in the BIOS.

As I read it, the fix you suggest it JUST for AMD, I have Intel.

    OK! For now!

I have installed this update on Intel products with results, as you noticed it had no warning not to use it otherwise.

    But 1st do this.

    boot to safe mode.

device manager ( in safe mode only, you could see duplicate devices if any)

remove all USB hubs and controllers

check for any "Unknown Devices " look for the question mark "? ". remove any that are here.

Check for duplicates in the "Ports Com amd LPT" if there are dupes of any item remove all the dupes.

If you have dupes in Monitors remove these.

DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING IN DISK OR VIDEO CONTROLLERS!

These items will reinstall when you boot back to full and hopefully correctly and fix your problem!

    Mike
