When attempting to use theTroubleshooters in 98 SE, I get the first list of problems in the Help window OK but after making a selection and clicking "NEXT" all I get is a blank window and nothing further. This happens on all the topics in the Troubleshooters listing !

I have run the System File Checker, but this has not indicated any files missing or corrupted. Any suggestions ?

    Hopefully Huew

Huew, if Ann's directions don't work there is an application called Tshoot that installs on your Start Menu that will re-activate the Windows Trouble shooters. Make a directory on your HD called Tshoot and download the attached Zip file to that directory. Unzip it to that directory. You will find two files: Tshoot.exe and readMe.txt, open the readMe file and follow the instructions for installing the Tshoot.exe into your Start Menu. I have used if for some time, works OK.

Basically what you do is create a shortcut to Tshoot.exe on your desktop and then drag the icon "Tshoot.exe" to the Start button and it puts an item on the main start menu that will run the Windows TS. You can then delete the desktop shortcut.

    Hi John,
Actually one of my threads in the link provided does have that:

This is the direct link to a site to download win98_ts_fix.zip. It is explained as a small application which will run the Trouble Shooters by disabling the [activex restriction] registry fix only while you have the Trouble Shooter open. As well, it uses it's own call to the file and that is not something that would be easy for an attacker to exploit.
    http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/SoftFixes.htm

For the explanation of the above applet, in the writers own word's:
    http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Windows/98/Index.htm

But this is well worth mentioning again and stressing that it is one of the "two" preferred methods or workarounds for using the tshooters versus trying to circumvent or reverse any security update that was designed for your protection.

The other was using the on-line troubleshooters but since I have not checked that particular sublink I'm not even sure if this is possible since win98xx support is kaput or minimal at best.

    Oops!

Didn't mean to step on your toes there. I couldn't remember where I got the Tshoot originally and was too lazy to follow your link. Too much Xmas food and too much darn snow to shovel the last few days!!! Now that I see the W98.....zip file I remember how I got it in the first place.

    No problem John,
I'd never consider what I call "reinforcement" as a toe crusher. Feeling a bit lazy myself (still struggling with cold/flu), you just gave me that little extra push I needed to be more complete in this posts explanation of the file you were suggesting as possible fix, otherwise I wouldn't have even mentioned it.
