Given the problems that SP1 caused for a good number of XP users, the delay on SP2 indicates to me that MS has learned a "few" lessons concerning the release of major updates.

Given the size and complexity of SP2 and the fact that RC2 isn't due until next month, I think July/August is a reasonable release target for the final of SP2.

From that article, I would also guess that they have found some major apps that won't run under SP2 without some rewrites and are giving the app vendors a little time to modify their code and ship updates.

Take as much time as they need is all I can say. SP2 IS overdue, but we want a stable SP.

Let Microsoft take its time and do it right

The first part of the article says that it is taking way too long for Microsoft to release SP2..... and then it says: "Lets just hope that Microsoft does a thorough job in beta testing this Service Pack, and will only release it if they are confident that it is "good to go ", and not because of some arbitrary date that was set by someone." You can't have both!

For good order, we're talking about my Newsletter article.

What I meant to say was that yes, SP2 is long overdue. Sp1 was released in September 2002, and previously a service pack would be released roughly every 12 months, and SP2 was originally scheduled for a fall 2003 release. By the time it gets released, we will be 2 years from SP1. That's just too much.

That said, an extra 2 or 3 months now don't really matter, so better they get it as good as they can...

SP1 in the hand is worth SP2 in the bush

In the light of the enormous problems caused by SP1 and my experience beta testing it, a savvy user would be well advised to beef up their firewall and wait at least twelve months after the release of SP2 for the bugs to be combed out and for OEM's to catch up with their application software upgrades before installing SP2. It is evidently going to make Windows XP run a whole lot slower. So why not wait until you up grade your cpu to around 5 Mhz and you might then be OK and application software may be ready.

I'm running SP2 RC1 on my laptop, and don't have any problems. It's not running slower either...
