Where find update for MS Java VM (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-011),
Microsoft Windows 98SE What is better to install: Sun JVM or Microsoft VM? Should I uninstall existing Java VM first?

albatros--Not sure if you want the update to the bulletin or to the MSVM. The bulletin (latest update is April 2004) is available here.
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-011.mspx
If you click on Patch Availability it says "The patch is available to update existing Microsoft VMs via the Windows Update web site. " The latest version is 3810, so if you already have that, no need to patch further.
If, however, you do not have any version of MSVM on your PC, you cannot use Windows Update, but you can get it here.
    http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/18/10-18-20.shtml
I like MSVM, but many others like Sun. Somewhat a matter of choice. If you like Sun, why switch?
I suppose you know that MS will not be updating MSVM in the future.

Usually it never hurts to delete an old version before installing a new, especially if no user "settings" are involved (as is the case here). But I do not know. I am almost sure the downloads from MS Windows Updates did not require an uninstall. So try installing over whatever you have. You can always uninstall if that does not work.

If you delete the current MSJVM, the update will not install.

Its easier to just use suns.

I think if you haven't keep up with all the updates from Microsoft as they came out you could have ended up with an old version of there virtual machine
In other words if its to old windows update will not offer you anything, and you will have to use a third party website to obtain it, like the link Jim provided.

Its real easy to check, do a file search for msjava.dll and check the properties > version

    Java 2 from Sun: which?

Applet builder program requires that Java 2 is installed to create applets.
It's recommended to install the smaller "JRE" from Sun. There are various versions of Java available on http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html Which from them considered as 'small' ?

That certainly is true if you try to get version 3810 from Windows Update. But I do not know if that applies to the softpedia.com download. Actually from what I have read, people who did not get any MSVM when they installed WinXP SP1 apparently could put MSVM on their PC's using softpedia. (MS took MSVM out of the XP SP1 download, though it was in original WinXP.)
In any event albatros can install the softpedia.com download over whatever it is he has on his PC.

My XP SP1a did not come with Msjava. To get MsjavaWu.Exe to install, I first had to install MsJavax86.Exe. I received the message that MsJava must already be installed, then MsjavaWu exited.
M$ took it out due to the lawsuit with Sun, which is how it should have been. I remember Sun coming out with Java back in the early 90's, just before Win95 came out. It wasn't the VM it is now, mostly JavaScript, due to Win3.1 being the windows of the day.

Yes, version 5.00.3810 with a Time Stamp of 3-6-2003 on the Digital Signature. I left out the bunchofnumbersandletters at the end of the filename, they sort of look like a Md5 signature.

I remembered the XP not supported Java thread from April this year. At that time there was no definitive conclusion but hopefully we will get to know the truth this time.

My search directed me to the MSVirtual Machine thread which contains a link to www.virtualmachine.tk and clicking Downloads reveal the quoted information:

I downloaded the 5.00.3810 file to compare and it is exactly the same as the one at softpedia.
(That site has a good server, 5.07 MB in five seconds!)

To double check, I downloaded again from softpedia and my bet is that the origin is the same. The download dialog says "From: download.windowsupdate.com" in both cases and the speed was very high from softpedia too.
