    Windows XP Home Edition SP2
    Easy CD Creator 5
    CD-R disks

I have a new computer as described above. When I format a CD and drag & drop or copy & paste files to a newly formatted CD, the file become Read Only. When I attempt to copy/paste a revision of an existing file I am told I cannot do that because the file (on CD) is Read Only.

On my previous computer which was also Windows XP and using Easy CD
Creator 5 and the same type of CDs, I could easily save changed files with no message about Read Only.

Why is this happening? I need to be able to save updated files on the same CD they were originally saved as well as on the hard drive.

    Hello Eleanor,

Similair problem to yours in this thread.

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=57542

Even though it turned out to be bad CD-R's, Sparrow's post #8 explains how the CD-R should not be closed out. That may be the problem here.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for your reply, but that post and threads doesn't answer my question. I have never closed out this particular CD-R ... and I know the difference between closing a CD and leaving as is.

I have used this batch of CD-Rs for some time and never had the problem until I began to save to CDs with the new computer.

I used several CD-Rs from this batch, always with the same result (read only files)

    Still looking for a resolution.

Files written to a cdr are ALWAYS automatically set as read-only, no exceptions. Files on cdrw may have different permissions. It sounds like you are using Direct CD package of Easy CD Creator 5. Direct CD is buggy sometimes and imho not worth the space & memory it takes up. Just manually burn data to disks or use xp built in "direct cd ".

Try copying the file from cd to had first, then change the file properties PRIOR to editing the file. Then burn back to cd.

I thought so too Tony and was going to post the same but decided to do some experimenting first. I have EZCD 5 so I formatted a cdr for Direct CD and wrote a few files to the disk. They all retained the attributes they had previously and none were marked read only. I copied them all back to the hard drive and those weren't marked read only. So it appears we were both wrong in our thinking when Direct CD is involved.

OK, I still don't understand why I can't copy files to a CD without them becoming 'Read Only' when I know I was able to do it with my old pc.
See my initial post on this subject.

So, if I use a CD-RW disk will all copied files be 'Read Only'? Or can I copy files and then copy updates to the same files without the properties changing?

    Hi Eleanor,

I think the read only issue as applied to a file is a red herring. The message applies to the media, not the files.

I'll bow out here because I use version 7 of Roxio, use RW's only, and I don't use Drag and Drop (called Direct CD in v5.0) feature at all, I either append files to RW's or copy the contents to the HD, make changes, erase the RW, then burn them back to the RW from the HD.

    Regards - Charles

Must be a direct cd only thing. I never used it or installed it so cannot test it. I have never seen anything other than readonly when manually buring files to a crd though.

Same here. Any files I've burned to a cdr in what one might consider the "normal" way of burning files, have always had the read only attribute. I have used Direct CD in the past with CDR's but it's been a long time since and at the time I never bothered to check the attributes of the files I wrote using it. I suspect they weren't marked read only then either though because I was always able to overwrite a file on the disk and never received the error that Eleanor316 is getting.

Easy CD Creator - read-only files

Just thought I'd update this forum on the problem I was having with copying files to CD-R disks with ECDC5 resulting in read-only files.

I un-installed Easy CD Creator 5 and installed both Roxio Creator LE Dell Edition and RecordNow vers 7 both of which came with my new Dell pc. Now I can backup all types files to CD-R disks and they do not become read-only files.

I can edit the files on my hard drive and save them a CD-R any number of times without changing the file name or the attributes.

Thanks for the update Eleanor :)

We'll refer back to this thread whenever this comes up again.
