Hi! I'm new to this forum so any help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent most of my free time the last few days trying to fix a problem I have with IE and stumbled upon this forum. After searching the forum, I did not find any solution.

My problem arose two days ago, I believe after Win XP updates were installed. I have no problem opening IE and searching any page I want. The problem is if that page has a link I click on and a new window opens there is no addr and the page is blank with the mouse hour glass continously running. I have no problem closing this window and if I type the addr in it works fine. I have tried going back to a previous restore point (prior to last updates) and this does not fix the problem. I found Microsoft Antispyware and ran that and deleted anyting it flagged as not needed.

    Thanks again for any help,
    Brent

    89RaggTopp - Welcome to the Board :)

    Check out this ....

In IE go Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab > ' IE should check whether it is the default browser' - is that box checked? If not check it and next time you open IE, you should get a question box asking if you want IE to be the default browser. Click on 'Yes'.

    A couple :)

Thr first step in a Repair of Internet Explorer is to run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer > System.

If that fails to solve the problem ....

Download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature, save it to a folder on your hard drive, not to the Desktop, run it and post the log here.

Pete - I appreciate the help. I ran the system file checker, and fount event viewer. I see some items have error or warning instead of information as type. How do I know if something was replaced. I can't open your Quicklinks as this is my problem, opens a second window that is blank but running with no addr.
    Thanks

Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and type in the following command and click OK. Make sure to leave a space between regsvr32 and the filename.

    regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.
Then do each of the following.

    regsvr32 Shell32.dll
    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

    Reboot.

Just a tip here....you should be able to right click a link, such as Pete's Quicklinks, and have an option to 'copy shortcut', which you can then paste in the address bar.

Take a look at the screen grab below - the two entries between the red lines show SFC Start and Finish - if any files were replaced the event would be reported between these two entries. To open an event double click on it.

Glad to hear that your problem is solved
