    To Westside:

Thanks for replying. I have not posted any other note about my problems in the past with NS 7.2. I am still using 7.01 with no quirks. I periodically check to see if anyone has a new answer, that's all.

    Indycolt,

I would try Westside's suggestion. Create a new Profile, and give it a name unique to the existing Profile. Do this before you install 7.2.

Install Netscape 7.2 in a separate folder than Netscape 7.01. Use C:\Netscape 7.2 for the folder. See: Netscape 7.2 Custom Install

    Ramona or Westside:

Regarding your statement: "Install Netscape 7.2 in a separate folder than Netscape 7.01. Use C:\Netscape 7.2 for the folder. See: Netscape 7.2 Custom Install "

So, if I understand you, I would have to create two profiles, one for 7.01 and a new one for NS 7.2. At Netscape sign on, I would have to select the browser version I desire and then click "Start Netscape Browser ".

    Are my statements essentially correct?

If correct, I will attempt to install again according to your directions previously, but if no luck,I will always have 7.01 to fall back on. (I have a disc for 7.01)

Yes, they are, with one small addition, which is for your convenience. When you create the Profiles, drag the netscp.exe file to the Desktop with a right click, and select "Create shortcut(s) here ". You should have one shortcut on your Desktop now for the existing Profile. This will give you two Netscape shortcuts on your Desktop.

Right click on the Netscape Desktop icon

    Select: Properties
    Click on the Shortcut tab

To the existing Target line, add the following:
    -P profilename

The Target line should now be similar to this:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -P yourprofilename

NOTE: There is a space after Netscp.exe" and before -P

By having the two shortcuts, each for an individual Profile, you will bypass the Profile Manager when you start Netscape.

    Good luck then!

Please, right click rename the shortcut to the correct program to avoid confusion. Since you have 7.01, rename that one first.
One additional tip, in case it is necessary to create a shortcut, iis to go the location into which the program is installed, in Windows Explorer and right click netscp.exe, and select "Create shortcut ". No need for dragging.
However the installation of 7.2 should have created a shortcut, anyway.

Yes, this is a true statement. However, one more little question. What is the necessity of having two NS shortcuts? After installing the NS 7.2 and going
through all your suggestions and checking to see that NS 7.2 functions properly, CAN I REMOVE NS 7.01 AND ALL IT'S FILES WITHOUT CAUSING TOO MUCH DISRUPTION?

NOTE: I have already attempted to install 7.2 AFTER removing NS 7.01 in the past with no luck. Maybe by adding the identification line in Shortcut properties will solve the problem. I will see. Geeeeeeez, I am glad I have a downloaded NS 7.01 on a disc to fall back on.

You need two shortcuts only if you want to keep the two versions. If you are satisied or dissatisfied, you can, of course, uninstall one version. As you do that, from the Add/Remove the shortcut will also be removed.
There will no disruption, at all, to the remaining program. However, the extra profile will be remain, which you can reuse at a later date.
I am reusing a profile created for Netscape7.01, for a Mozilla 1.8a5 nightly. I made a few trivial changes to the prefs.js, and the thing works like a charm.

RE: "The Target line should now be similar to this:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -P yourprofilename "

I tried to install NS7.2 again this afternoon without removing the existing 7.01 version. I added the -P name as instructed to my 7.01 profile and then attempted the install without removing background programs. Same result, but two shortcut icons. If you click on either shortcut it flashes and refuses to open. I will attempt other approaches later. I removed both versions. Reinstalling 7.01 is a little slow from my downloaded version on a CD.

Question: I notice in my ADD/REMOVE file an entry Netscape Communicator 4.75. Is it important or should it also be removed if possible? I also have a Communicator Folder on my C drive. Is that important or should it be deleted?

Please, no hurry with an answer. Sometimes I feel dumb about this, but am stubborn and just keep trying.

    Ramona and Westside:

This was my final attempt to install NS 7.2 and this time I kept my NS 7.01 icon on the desk top. Result: Both browser icons did not open when clicked.

First I added the -P xxxxx to the 7.01 Target site in the icon.
Second I created a new profile for the eventual addition of 7.2.
Third I restarted the computer and removed background running programs and installed 7.2 in a separate folder, e.g. C:\Netscape 7.2

I then restarted the computer and when the NS icons appeared I added the -P yyyy statement to the 7.2 icon Target site.

I clicked on one icon---no result. I clicked on the other icon---no result.

In conclusion, I probably fouled up the programs when I initially attempted to install 7.2 over the 7.01, but do not really know.

    Indycolt,

Not sure where to go with this, as a clean install, which includes a new Profile, usually clears up any problem with Netscape or Mozilla. Uninstalling through Add/Remove, deleting the GRE folder and the Netscape Program folder, then a reboot before installing Netscape again, is all it takes. I don't understand why it isn't working for you.

I don't understand the failure of 7.2 installation either, but a ton of thanks for your concern. (Westside also). I have tried to follow all your directions, but with failure each time.

It still may be that originally I tried to install 7.2 from the purchased disc without clearing out the GRE file, etc. and with some remnants of 7.01 present.

I am no expert, but those are my feeling. Oh well, 7.01 is adequate for me so I am happy.

If you have other ideas, pass them on. I am still very curious, but not unhappy.

I am now using the NS 7.01 Browser with a single profile.

On my C drive the following files and pathways are presently shown:

    1. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mozilla.org\Netscape Shared (No GRE)

    2. C:\Program Files\ Netscape\Netscape\AOL\chrome\components\plugins......etc.

    3. C:\jWindows StartMenu\Programs\Netscape 7.0\Netscape Communicator

If I attempt to install NS 7.2 in a destination directory according to your instructions, it installs and the GRE file 1.7.2.200..... appear in their proper slots.

Still, after installation, when clicking on the 7.2 icon or the 7.01 icon (if left on the C drive), either one will only briefly flash and no browser opens up. Strange.

It is at this point, I REMOVE 7.2, 7.01 and reinstall 7.01 from my personal disc with no problems.

I only provide this information after careful study and for your interest. Any ideas will be accepted, but I am convinced that the solution is beyond us.

    Indycolt,

You can delete the mozilla.org folder here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mozilla.org

I'm going to split the Bookmarks thread and add it to this one, as it went so far off topic.

    Netscape 7.2 Problems

    Ramona and Westside.

    Statement by Ramona:

"You can delete the mozilla.org folder here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mozilla.org "

I followed this step and removed Mozilla file. I then installed NS 7.2 in a separate file (Netscape 7.2) and still retained my NS 7.01 browser previously installed. So, at this point two browsers,

    I rebooted computer.

I then clicked the NS 7.2 shortcut. It did not open.

I then clecked the NS 7.01 shortcut. It did not open.

Frustration again, but maybe a little more tweaking and another installation is called for. I do not know but I have no confidence in 7.2.

    Indycolt,

I noted that this path has an error, or is this a typo:

    C:\jWindows StartMenu\Programs\Netscape 7.0\Netscape Communicator

    Indycolt,
you got somehow, in a vicious loop, and things are not working. It is very simple to make 7.2 work, but if you have to resort to all the tricks you have, and done them right, I would not be able to come up with anything useful.
Sorry, you live too far for house calls.

Sorry, the above was simply a typo error.

I am sorry too. I have constantly said that to myself.

    Westside and Ramona:

I have attempted to install NS 7.2 several times either with 7.01 present or removed using different files as suggested. Each time has met with failure. I have created new profiles, new files, etc. Still no success.

Therefore, I must conclude that this is futile. Either my NS 7.2 disc is defective or my registry is faulty which I find hard to believe.

I have had no trouble whatsoever installing NS 7.01 from a disc. It installs perfectly every time. But, NS 7.2 has never responded and even interferes with NS 7.01 if it is present.

So, in any event if you arrive at another solution, let me know, but as far as I am concerned this issue should be closed and I have to accept the fact that I made a bad purchase. Thanks to both of you. You have been patient and have provided me with a little knowledge.
