I am running Microsoft Security Essentials with a Windows 7 operating system. My realtime protection is on and my virus and spyware definitions are up to date. Yet when I put the cursor on Microsoft Security essentials in the system tray it says I am "potentially unprotected ". Does anyone know why it says I am potentially unprotected even though I have it turned on and my definitions are up to date?

    Hi Markala,

I am new to MSE also but as I understand it this warning will occur for several reasons, needing an update for 1, a reboot after a cleanup, a failed scheduled scan, a file or folder it could not scan.....etc. See:
    http://www.microsoft.com/security/products/mse.aspx

As the above link indicates, open MSE up and while on the home tab see if it offers a reason and solution (via the "action button ") for giving this status warning.

Just to add a bit to what Goddez said.

I've used MSE for a while and as far as I can tell there are two issues that will make it say you are Unprotected. One is that you have Real-Time Protection switched off on the Settings page the other is that a scheduled scan has not taken place. Updates are automatic and as far as I can tell you cannot turn them off.

MSE is set by default to scan every Sunday at 02.00 but only if you are not using the PC and it is switched on. As far as I can recall if it misses the schedule you have to start the scan manually after which the icon in the tool bar will change from red back to green.

The Home page should tell you what the existing problem is, right click on try icon and click on Open, chances are you have missed a scheduled scan.

Thank you, you're right, I did a scan and now it reads protected. I'll mark this one resolved. Take good care of yourself.
