AVG Performance Issues (how to avoid)

I've read numerous reports and discussions re AVG being slow, delays boot times, lagging, etc. I must say that I have never encountered these issues. I've been installing it on my clients' systems since version 8.x came out and have had no problems.

However, I believe any performance issues w/ AVG are not due to its virus engine or driver, but are caused by its additional technologies, thus I always do a custom install.

I NEVER install Link Scanner (it slows Web browsing considerably) and after the first update I use the Advanced options to configure AVG to NOT scan outgoing email and to NOT use scheduled scans. The only thing scheduled is updates.

It does not make sense to do daily or weekly scans IF one is using auto-protect, for the program will do scanning daily anyway.

Installing and configuring AVG this way leads to no performance issues.

Very lucky. I have tried to install free version on at least 5 computers all with custom setting & had to remove it within hours. The systems slowed to a c-r-a-w-l.

I agree with you Tony. I did disable the Link Scanner because the slow down in Internet surfing was noticeable. I also do not do scheduled scans, but I do have it set to scan outgoing mail. Scanning outgoing mail does not really slow things down for me and I'm sure I'm not sending a nasty to anyone. Just extra insurance.

I waited awhile to install version 8 because of reported problems. I have to say that I am please with the new version. The startup times for my system seem to be quicker and updating is definitely quicker. I do like it.

rsinfo, sorry to hear about the problems that you are having with it. I assume that your systems are meeting the minimum requirements for the new version. Are you removing the previous version completely before installing the new?

Yes Mike, I have tested it on both old & freshly formatted systems. All are current generation CPUs with 1 GB RAM. Same results on all of them. Go figure.

rsinfo,

Well, I guess all the bugs are not worked out for all systems. I saw in another thread that there was other options for free AV software. Hopefully, one of those will work for you.

I've been using AVG for number of years on all of my computers.
Unfortunately, version 8.0 is totally unprepared for final release. Has been, and still is.
Even, if it works for number of people, there is a huge number of people for whom it doesn't work, and this is what counts.
No application should work for 60% people, only, required workarounds, and such.
There is no reason to use it, when some other free antivirus programs are available.
I'm not computer newbie, but I was never able to install AVG 8.0 on my Vista, gave up after few hours of trying, and installed Avast.
On XP, I was able to install AVG after couple of days of trying, and I did so only because it's my test OS installation, and I wanted to know what's going on.
On Windows 2K, which had AVG 7.5, I switched to Avira, and installed Avast on Win 98 (had AVG 7.5).
At least for now, AVG is a history for me.

Grisoft should extend the support for AVG 7.5 & stop pushing AVG 8 down users throat. Maybe I am talking to a wall.

They kept changing ver. 7.5 support deadline.
When they released ver. 8.0, support for ver. 7.5 was supposed to end at June 30th. Then when things went awry with 8.0, they changed it to December 31st.
Later, after couple of 8.0 updates, they changed their mind again - August 31st.
Oh, well, not my problem anymore.
