I'm working on a friend's desktop and want to install AVG 8.0 free, however, the older version will not completely un-install.

And when I try to install v. 8.0 anyway, it will stop and abort at about the75% mark.

    Suggestoins?

Clear out the registry of all mentions of AVG or Grisoft - I suggest using jv16PowerTools - Find in Registry - make the backup of course.

30 day uncrippled trial of jv16PowerTools here ....

Alternatively dump AVG and switch to Avira - freeware and as good if not better.

    Hi Bonk

    Get Revo http://www.revouninstaller.com/revosetup.exe

Run it click view to show details. Then find AVG rt click and click un-install, then check Advanced-next are you sure=yes wait for un-install then click next, then next again.

On the Leftover Registry items click ONLY the Bold items and Delete. If the screen shows remaining Keys with + then click the + to drill down to a BOLDED item or items and remove them.

When screen is blank click next if it shows Remaining Files select all and delete.

    Close Revo.

Then do a Windows search using Advanced Options (Search System Folders, Hidden Fles and Folders, Subfolders) for grisoft*.* then AVG7*.* delete all found.

    Reboot.

Get CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds get Slim at bottom

Use it to clean temps and registry run both multiple times until they come up clean.

When finished Reboot one more and install AVG8. Warning as far as I know they are still having performance issues, slow boot, slow to desktop and general slow down of system on some computers.

Thanks to all for the help.

What I did was download and install:
    - CC Cleaner
    - Avira Antivirus
    - AdAware
    - Spybot

Avira found nine trojans... Quarantined those buggers.

Spybot found four groupings of junk. Deleted those.

AdAware cleaned up with hits on 30 objects. Removed those.

Then I ran CC Cleaner and the Registry entries were too many to count.

I removed the references for Norton AV, and everthing with AVG or Grisoft in the wording.

Even after that the AVG software was still showing up in the Start menu and on the task bar, so I went back in and disabled it with another program that I'll have to post the name of via edit...

Finally, I manually deleted the AVG folders from the Start/Programs menu.

Then I set it for a complete error check and rebooted. I'll look back in on it in the morning.

Thanks again. More later ... today.

    Hi Rick

Likely one of the culprits was of the kind that tries to disable the AntiVirus and had AVG disabled and/or damaged hence the uninstall problem.

With the baddies you found I would also do the following:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Clean and update Java

Cleanup old Java and update to newest version this program will do it all for you.

Unzip it, run it, cleanup old versions then use the update, chose Jucheck first and if you do not have Jucheck then chose Update using Sun.

Then click Additional tasks and check "Remove Useless JRE files ".

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

No insatall, run it delete all it finds decline to reboot on each item found, until the program finishes then reboot.

Xclean will run minimized and will pop up a window if it finds anything. If it finds nothing it will exit.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
Get the below insatall and update then run and clean then post log

If it found much then reboot to Safe Mode and run it again then paste a new log for this run when back to normal mode!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Finally:

    Scan online Kaspersky WebScanner
It will start and update itself.

    Chose My Computer to scan

    When finished click Scan Report
    May take some time.

If infections found it will show a log.

Chose Save Report As button, and give it a name select type Text. Save the file to desktop.

    Post contents.

Last: So we can see if anything left.

Reboot then go here and post HJT and DSS logs

So go here read and understand get us HJT and DSS logs (both DSS logs)

Mike, thanks. My buddy is out of town and will get back tomorrow, so I've got to wrap it up and hand it back to him sometime on Sunday. He works from a home office and this cpu is critical to his daily routine.

And today being Saturday I have my own household stuff to do ... lawn, empty the dishwasher while the wife has the grandson at the park and hits a few garage sales, etc.

Hey! I got snookered; I should be at the park with the kid while she does the house stuff -- but I do have my buddy's desktop to contend with. :(

Anyway -- back to the topic: the unit is running much better today and after a half dozen scans it seems to be clean. So I'm going to bookmark this thread and will come back to it so I can expand my reservior of knowledge for the next adventure. (Time limitations are such that I may not be able to collect all the log data and get it posted before he is back).

My next question has to do with parental control software. Part of the problem with the unit is that he caught his grandson peeping at a bit of stuff that is outside the family limits! I'll not have time to shop and get that software installed for him, so I'll have to pass along that recommendation and turn him loose.

In terms of his work needs the safest route is to just keep the grandson off the unit altogether and buy a seperate unit for the kids, but they may not want to buy another computer simply for homework, and I know they keep everything in one room so they can see what is being viewed! But that's their call to make.

    Thanks again to all.

    Rick
