    WD 1.1.1347.0
    Engine 1.1.1508.0
    Def. version 1.14.16337.1

I set it to do a scheduled full scan at 8 PM . Nothing happens. Tried 9 PM. Still nothing happens. Should I uninstall and reinstall? I know I can do them manually, but I have to remember to do that. :)

    Hi Alicia J
This seems to be a on going problem for some reason with WD.
You can check through this thread to see if something there it might help.
To my knowledge it was never resolved.

If this is on a Windows 2000 OS, this is a known issue with creating the Scheduled Task that actually executes the scan. Microsoft is currently working on a fix for this issue. Haven't seen or heard of this in any other OS.

I went to read about issue in links provided. Thanks. Doesn't seem to be a solution for this. If I decided to try the updating definitions manually, can someone give me the link so I can download definitions manually. Maybe updating them thru WU is mucking something up.

In Defender, click on the little arrow to the right of the question mark and then click "About Windows Defender ". You will see a link on the page that allows you to manually update the definitions database.

You might want to try uninstalling Defender, rebooting and reinstalling Defender as well, especially if you are running anything besides Windows 2000.

Just keep in mind that this is still in beta form and is buggy.

I'm having a moment. Yes I have used the manual check for update.

My WD will update definitions okay, it just won't do a scheduled scan.

I might uninstall and reinstall. Where are the definitions located on C drive? I'd like to make sure they're gone when I uninstall, before I reinstall.

Its in C:\Program Files\Windows Defender and should be under the Definition Update Descriptions.

This is what I have in my C:\program folder\windows defender.

    Would that be AS_sigs.MSI?

That's the Defender installer package. If that's all you have in that folder then it should be good to go. If you have issues then delete that as well.

I have lots od dll files and a couple of exe files.

I've decided to just manual scans rather then deal with the schedule bug.

No, its never been fixed, I did however locate the "hot fix ". After a little more research I decided against using it. I don't remember why. If your interested, I'll try to find the link again and post it.

I am still trying to figure out how to make the work around work.
Ya, I'm stll here. I manually Quick Scan with Defender everyother day and do a full scan every Saturday. I still like Defender.

I also thought this was a problem exclusive to XP Pro

There is a "hot fix" available from Microsoft Support if you have a retail version of Windows XP

    I have a Home edition XP SP2

Thanks, but I think I'll just do the manual scan too.

I will alert this to the beta team, I haven't seen any discussion about this in the beta forums I frequent to. They mentioned Win2000 but not XP.

I've got their attention currently, they are checking into it and will get back with me tomorrow. Although you might not like their answer, but at least they will know about it now.

    Here's the beta teams answer:
Under normal conditions you will never see defender working, you set the schedule and it does it's thing without you knowing about it. If you would like to see the icon in the notification area go to tools -options and scroll down about half way and you will be able to choose when you see the icon.

Thanks for posting the beta team info Skipslot. If I do a manual scan the windows defender shows the scan on my desktop. The last scan shows the last time I did a manual scan. I tried the scheduled scan. I don't see it running on desktop like I do with a manual scan. A scheduled scan, even if it did run in backround as they say, is not updating the last scan.

Beta Team is WRONG WRONG WRONG. Defender is NOT scanning when scheduled. If it were the icon wound not turn yellow with an exclimation mark. It would not say "a scan has not been performed in three days" if it were auto scanning.

And EXACT description of the problem can be found at this following link
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884573
THIS IS AN EXACT WORD FOR WORD DESCRIPTION

Well, I scheduled one for today at 11am and it shows when I open it (home page) the last scan was 11am today. It was a quick scan though, I'll try a full scan. Do you have this version of Defender?

    Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
    Engine Version: 1.1.1560.0
    Definition Version: 1.14.1657.8

Yes that is the version I have installed in my computer. I can schedule a scan on the hour every hour it will NOT scan.

Please read through the following thread
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=54224
because everything you are about to suggest has already been tryed.

The problem is not my computer, it is a conflict between Defender and XP Pro and some update. Windows Antispy worked properly.

By your last question I am going to assume that you did not read the link from my last post. This link describes the reason the scan is not working

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884573
The following is the reason (from the link above)
    CAUSE
This problem occurs because of a regression that was introduced in both of the following updates: • Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.
    • The update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
841873 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841873/) MS04-022: A vulnerability in Task Scheduler could allow code execution

Please read this or you will be going around in circles. The description of the problem was dicovered by GERI. The solution still eludes us.

We are only talking about auto scan (scheduled scans)
Every Other Scheduled Scan Runs When Its Sopposed To. (Nortons for example)

Please read the previous post, it will save us both alot of time.

By the way, other than scheduled scans Defender works properly

Any way I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this. Thank you.
And this is the first time I heard about this problem affecting XP Home. I have XP Home on my computer at work and it scans every morning at 8am.
