I recently downloaded and installed Windows Defender Beta and I have one problem with it. It will not automatically scan my computer daily.

In the tools and settings menu, I have selected "Automatically Scan My Computer ", I also selected "Daily" and Selected "Save "

I have noticed that Windows Defender does not appear in my notification area of my task bar. Can anyone tell whats going on. I dont think Defender is starting when I start my computer.

    Hi Ranger SVO
    Welcome to Windowsbbs
Under "tools" "Options" if you scroll down to "real time protection options" there is a button for "Choose when the WD icon appears in the notification area "
    (These Two Options)
"Only when WD detects an action to take "
    "Always "
Select "Always" if you want the icon there.

If you open WD at the bottom is status info. It should tell you when the last scan was and the time you have it set to scan.

Thank you for your reply. The Windows Defender Icon is now in the notification area.

The last scan was yesterday but only because I manually Initiated the scan. Prior to that the last scan was on the 9th of May.

I'll know at 7 pm if it runs a scan or not. I'll let you know.

I dont know if this is important or not, I had Windows Antispy installed before Defender. Antispy did work properly. Windows said that there was an update available so I let it update automatically. Everything seemed to go really smooth, nothing out of the ordinary.

    Again thanks for the reply

Well it 9:05 PM and Windows Defender Did NOT run the scheduled scan at 7:00 PM. Any Ideas.

It seems to be working other than automatic scans. I upgraded a program this morning and it can up and ask if a change to the should be allowed.

I will entertain any and all ideas.

    Hi Ranger SVO
Are your settings set for Automatic scan?

    From WD help...
Here is a snap shot of the settings, see below.
If so, maybe someone else will chime in here. I'll see if I can find anything at the help center.

    Hi Ranger SVO
Here is a link to WD help posts. You may want to check through them and see if anything there will help you figure out the problem.

    WD Help

Something was said about being logged in as the Administrator. Also someone had to download the definitions manually and then the auto scan started working.
Go through them and see if something rings a bell for you.
Keep checking back to see if someone else posts with a idea here.
Lets use know if you find a solution also.

Thanks for the link. Many others have the same problem. I think I might have found the answer.

If I go to Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance, then Scheduled Tasks, Defender is not there.

I have added Defender to the Scheduled Task list

Now I just wait till tommorow

    Hi Ranger SVO
I'm guessing  that your OS is not XP??

    What OS are you running?
I looked in my scheduled tasks, and windows defender in not in there, But it scans daily as I have it set to do.

I think that I would uninstall and reinstall to see if that will fix it.

Bear in mind, that when I tried to install WD the first time it would not install correctly for me unless I saved it to my hard drive and then run the set up from there.
For some reason it would not install from their web site directly.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2

It is in your Schedule Tasks, go to "advanced" and check "veiw hidden tasks" it will be the one labled MP Scheduled Scan.

Can you right click on MP Schedule Scan and then click on properties and tell me what is in the "Run as " line.

Auto start is checked and both items are checked in Administrator options.

I just might try to reinstall it.

I uninstalled Defender and reinstalled it from my hard drive. I just have to wait till tommorrow.

And that is NOT what is in my RUN AS line. And it says I don't have permission to change it. Now what. How could I not have permission not to change something on my computer? What do I need, a note from my mother?

Manual scan every other day is starting to look good.

O K I've finished venting, this is really funny I'm starting to enjoy this.

    Hi Ranger
Did you set a password for WD?
Here is what my properties window looks like. I don't have a password set.
I have never had to change anything that asked for my system password which I believe is what you need to change the "run as" line.

I wonder if PeteC and Tony (staff members) are reading this and just laughing at me/us  :D
I think they are just watching to see if we can figure this out.:p
If the uninstall and reinstall does not work I'll PM one of them to jump in here and give us a hand:p

Well, its 7:15 and it did not scan. I tryed to change the Run As line but it wont let me. I am logged on as administrator and my password is correct.

Any ideas, I'll listen to them all. I should mention that I have another computer with XP Home and Defender works properly on it. This computer has XP Pro. Both computers are configured the same way, use the same Firewalls, Anti Virus etc.

The RunAS line on the XP Home computer is the same as yours. Only this computer has something different, it has my name and the computers Service Tag Number.

    Hi Ranger
In Schedule Tasks WD properties under schedule click the advance and see what the start date is...see thumbnail below.

Also check the settings with what I have.

I'll see if I can get a staff member to look in on this also.

Far from laughing at you guys I am as puzzled as you are ....

I have Defender installed on my laptop (use CounterSpy on the desktop) which I rarely use at present.

One suggestion - a bit of lateral thinking :) - I don't think this has been made to date ....

In Defender under Tools > Options uncheck Automatic Scanning

Under Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks see if you can delete the task for Defender - maybe unlikely, but if you can do so.

Return to Defender and check Automatic Scanning - this should set up a new schedule - change the time of the scan.

Go back to Scheduled Tasks and see what the Run Line is now.

As an aside do you have any other scheduled tasks and do they run as expected?

    Hi Ranger
Also Might try going to add/remove programs, click on windows defender, click on "click here for support information ", then click on repair.
See if that will do anything?
