Hope this is the right forum.
My sister who runs win xp home with a dialup internet connection needs a free antivirus scanner,
The main choice seems to be between AVG and Avast
I would welcome any comments on these two programs bearing in mind she only has a dialup connection to do any updates is there any clear choice ?

thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't used AVG in some time but it worked well with dial-up. Of course I manually downloaded the updates at a time that was convenient to me during the night (every night) when their server wasn't overloaded. Avast has an option you can set for dial-up users. Avast with all options enabled can be slow at startup so you must be patient.

The biggest impeteus to get me to use broadband was updating my free anti-virus (AVG) and the free online anti-virus scanners.

I still use AVG free and back it with TrendMicro and eTrust. They usually find everything. Anything else, I don't know about! :)

    Avast Anti Virus

I had some trouble with AVG so went for Avast some months ago and have found it to be brilliant. It seems to work fine on its default settings, updates automatically and I love the way it 'talks' to me. When you pick up a virus, a siren goes off and you are given remedies, which always seem to do the trick - Highly Recommended.
