I installed the new beta and the first scan found a nasty that AdAware and Spybot S&D and Spyware Sweeper and SpywareBlaster did not find.

I read a review of Giant here that was pretty comprehensive.

    Yes.
    But why on earth >
" "Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) supports Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Serverâ„¢ 2003." "

Probably the same reason for that as for the spam filter (?) being available for Outlook 2003 but not Outlook XP.

What the reason is escapes me, though!

I'll stick with the usual suspects. Here's another attempt by Microsoft to first drive competitors out of business and then they'll start charging.

It seems that Microsoft puts out defective products then wants to be hero by supplying solutions!

Either somebody did not read or I read Wrong.

I read that MS BOUGHT the company ( Giant I believe ) that their new software is based on.

    I see nothing defective yet.

    Machine cleaned up.
Sypware and AV ( both onboard and Online ) checks ran. NOTHING FOUND.
    Shutdown and restarted System Restore.
    Download-Installed MS Anti-Spyware.
    Ran same
    THREE ITEMS FOUND
    Allowed to be removed.
    Restarted machine.
Machine STILL running. With MUCH SMOOTHER Browsing

Very Impressive - the GUI is nice and intuitive.

Also creates an SR point on the install - nice.

Nothing found on the scan. In the BHO area, flagged Acrobat's BHO as file missing - I have Acrobat's BHO disabled.

    A few quibbles:

The clean tracks area has Acrobat 4.0, I would say out of date.

Like a lot of software these days, doesn't like no for an answer. Ticked the no real time protection and shutdown the program. Wouldn't you know it, shows up in the tray and gives me an argument about shutting it down - a roll of the eyes.

    More later.

EDIT: It does change IE's Start page to microsoft.com - had to do the restore. Now this may only happen if MSN is the ISP, don't know. Someone else should confirm one way or the other.

    Regards - Charles

There is a area to change that.

BUT. I found it once but can't find it again.

    I like the reports also.

For those of you doing some good testing and discovering things, make sure you use the support newsgroups to report your findings. Thats the primary contact route for support during the beta.

    Man I hate BETA software
A prudent desicion. This IS beta software, not a released product. It may or may not work right. A beta program allows the real world to hammer on the tool, to find bugs, change functionality, and evaluate potential. You'll notice that on the main microsoft site, links to AdAware, spybot and such are still there. A beta is not the point to consider abandoning released (and proven) software for a solution thats still under development.

Ben - hats off to you - a very diplomatic and straight forward comment. Personally, I liked the interface; it found nothing and I was going to dump it. However, thanks in part to your response, I'd be a fool not to test drive this thing. Thanks ...

    Regards,
    ;)

    Thank you.

    Ben

Found by the First run were

    NewDotNet--Browser Plugin-High Risk in 2 locations.

Search Squire-- Medium Risk 3 enteries. I think that is the right name.

MiniBug-- Low risk but 20 entires in the Registry alone.

Now mind you. I had run full system scans with updated ( this AM ) existing programs.

The Browser alone is MUCH smoother.

I think it is time to shut down and restart System Restore. I sure as heck don't need the ones made before the scan and cleaning.

Billy, I've seen a few other forums reporting the same thing. The database is flagging some new stuff. I think part of the biggest challenge with this kind of software is finding the bugs in the first place. Its not like the spyware authors send out a copy.. You have to catch a malfunctioning machine with its hand in the cookie jar. Same reason a lot of folks here advocate running both spybot and adware, theres so much stuff out there, nothing covers it all.

The really exciting part for old hats is SpyNet, a way for users and experts to report new flavors of spyware. Thats a huge part of the puzzle, and lets security experts like the many on this board who are seeing the new stuff every day get the word out and prevent the next guy from catching it. Theres more information and links in the tool itself about how spynet works if you are interested.

    Thanks.

I just found the log file ( app 15K ) and WOW !! I about flipped when I saw where some of the crapola was located. I would say at least 95% was in the Registry.

At least one mentioned a FOLDER in C:\Windows\program Files. Which I either missed or never saw.

I will work on the SpyNet part.

My Wife has just challenged me to a game of Hearts.

    I accept

Because Windows 9x/Me are in their last stages of supported life, and MS wouldn't want to release new software for it.

Rightly so IMHO, they have had their life, time to move on!

(looking for my flame jacket :) )

Another thing I liked was that during setup it suggested to turn off the messenger service.

I tested it on a stock XP SP1 machine which had this service running (as is normal).

    Hi BB,

    A heads up:

Search Squire-- Medium Risk 3 enteries. I think that is the right name. From your post of yesterday.

In this thread, Search Squire is labeled as a False Positive http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=61015

I don't know one way or the other - but I think worth a look.

    Regards - Charles
