    Hi,

Yesterday, I logged into Outlook (at home) to found that I get an email from hotmail saying that the "email address doesn't exist ". It included the original message that was sent, and the subject line was "Thank you ", and there was no text, but an attachment (it didn't give me the file name).
I did not send such an email.

Today, I logged into Outlook to find that I have an email from AOL now saying that the email was not sent to the user due to a malicious virus as an attachment. It included the same subject line in the original message. I don't know whats going on, since I inspect my computer for viruses and I haven't got blaster worm or anything like that! The virus scanner claims that there are no files infected on this machine.

    Help would be appreciated...

    UPDATE (20:45):

I've found out that this worm is w32.sobig.worm, but my virus scanner doesn't detect it. I have no idea why.

    Don't know what to do...

Do you have your Virus scanner checking E-Mail both IN & OUT.

Also some scanners do not work with Hot Mail and AOL.

That is one of several reasons that I do not have either on my machines.

    Hi quackbal!

I don´t have the standalone Norton Anti Virus but Norton System Works and Norton Internet Security so, I´m not 100% sure about this:

Start NAV and find the "Options" button and click it. In the left hand panel find "Internet" and click "E-mail ". In the right hand panel You can now configure E-mail Scanning.

Either tick the correct boxes or choose "Page Defaults" at the bottom.

    HTH,
    Christer

Thanks for the help guys. :)

I'm still worried as to why it doesn't pick up this virus on my machine. :(

Well, Charles, nothing to be sorry about!

Two replies are better than one, especially if they concur - not in terms of time but contents ...... ;) ......

    Quackbal,
if Your virus definitions are up-to-date I would think that You´re safe but I wouldn´t be 100% sure either.

Run a Live Update and then a full NAV system scan, next give it the cross check that Charles suggests.

Yesterday, this virus hit me like a hail storm but NAV picked them all. Among the infected E-mails were a few E-mails from postmasters claiming that they had stopped infected E-mails that should have been delivered to me. If I still wanted them, I was prompted to get in contact with them.

Is it possible that You have received the same kind of E-mails as I did? This would mean that they didn´t accuse You of being the origin!

The Norton def files prior to the ones released yesterday (8/19) wouldn't find this latest version of the worm.

Good write up on it and a great locator/remover tool Here.

My wife evidently got bit just before she ran the update for her def files. The cleaner listed here removed things nicely.

As to scanning outbound email, since the sobig worm builds and uses it's own SMTP app for sending mail, you would probably never know you were sending stuff.

My NAV virus definitions were updated 8/20.

It seems like we´re getting some value for our money!
