My computer is really slowing down so I thought I would check with you about what I have running:
    1.) Microsoft Security Essentials
2.) Zone Alarm - Anitivirus Off, Firewall On
    3.) Spybot S & D
    4.) Spywareblaster
    5.) Malwarebytes
    6.) WinPatrol

    And I use CCleaner.

The tea timer in Spybot slowed my XP machine down, and Zone Alarm has become rather bloated to the point I uninstalled it. I now rely on Avast and Windows Firewall to protect XP and Windows 7. For what it's worth, I quit using Spybot too.

I doubt MSE will slow your machine down.

The rest of your software look good to me, although they may slow things down a bit if these programs are set to update automatically.

Open CCleaner and see how many programs are running at starup. (Tools > Startup)

I just installed MSE a few weeks ago, because I, too, was thinking ZoneAlarm might be causing some problems. I may just uninstall it and install something else.

There are 10 programs that run at Startup of which a few I don't recognize:
    NvCplDaemon by Microsoft
    PHIME2002A by Microsoft
    IMJPMIG8.1 by Microsoft
ctfmon.exe by Microsoft (which I think needs to run at startup?)

I manually do the updates weekly except for ZoneAlarm.

Another thing that's been happening a lot lately is that I'm getting a Scripts error to either continue or stop, so I've been stopping and I installed "NoScript" addon to see if that helps.

Ctfmon is the Microsoft process that controls Alternative User Input and the Office Language bar. It’s how you can control the computer via speech or a pen tablet, or using the onscreen keyboard inputs for Asian languages.

I recommend turning it off unless you need this service. You can disable it here via the system tray...

Evan is pretty good with slow computers. I'll let him, or someone else, assist you with the rest.

Hi KAL. Before I post my long guide for helping to speed up your computer, which Operating System is your machine running? Is your PC the same one under your My System link in your profile?

    Hi Kal,

Please have only one antivirus tool installed in computer.

Multiple antivirus tools can cause most of the issues with system performance.

Since the computer is pretty slow, follow these steps to help make the computer run faster:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.

    2. While in the Add/Remove programs window click the button that says Add/Remove Windows Components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, and Windows Messenger. Then click the Next button. When the wizard finishes click the finish button to close the window.

    3. Download and run ATF Cleaner. Save the program to your desktop. Run the program and when it opens select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button.

    4. Run Disk Cleanup. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files on the Disk Cleanup tab. Now click the More Options tab and under System Restore click the cleanup button. When it asks you if you want to delete all but the most recent restore point click Yes. Now click Ok on the Disk Cleanup window to allow Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files from the computer.

    5. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following, Black Vipers Services Guide.

    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installation wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes, open the program. When you open the program click on Settings< Defrag Priority and select High Priority. Then click on Settings< Program Settings< Algorithms Tab. Select the Delete temporary files before defragmenting checkbox and select the Move system files to the beginning on the disk checkbox. When done, click Ok to close the Settings window. When you are ready to start the defragmentation process select the small down arrow next to the word Defrag and select Defrag and Optimize. The process could take a long time so please be patient.

    7. Download and run Auslogics Registry Defrag. Make sure to uncheck any toolbars in the installation wizard as they are not needed. After the installation finishes, open the program. When the program opens click the Analyze button. When the process finishes analyzing click the Defrag Registry button followed by clicking the Restart button to finish the registry defrag process.

    8. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab< Under where it says Performance hit the settings button. In the Performance Options window click the Advanced tab and under Virtual Memory click the Change button. In the Virtual Memory window make sure your hard drive is selected and select the option that says System Managed Size and click the Set button. Now click Ok on the Virtual Memory window to close it. Now in the Performance Options window click the Data Execution Prevention tab and select the option that says Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select. After that's done click Ok on all the windows to close them out and then reboot the computer.

    9. Click Start< Run and type fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1 and hit enter.

After that command has been entered, click Start< Run again, delete the contents in the Run box and now type fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1 and hit enter.

    10. Take a look at these three links to further speed up your computer, Make Windows XP Shut Down Faster, Speed up Windows Start Menu, Automatically end tasks.

    11. Click Start< Run type in cmd and hit enter. The Command Prompt window will open. Paste the following command in the Command Prompt window and press enter, Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks.

    12. Run Check Disk on the hard drive to repair any errors in the file system. To do this click Start< My Computer. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. Then once the hard drive properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools Tab. Under where it says Error-checking click on the Check Now button. Ensure that both the Automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkboxes are both checked. After that is done click on the Start button. Check Disk will ask you to schedule the disk check when you restart your computer. Click on yes to do this and then restart your computer to allow check disk to run.

    13. Download the Junkware Removal Tool and save it to your desktop. Double click on the JRT program to run it. Post the JRT log in your next reply.

    14. Download AdwCleaner and save it to your desktop. Run the program. When the program opens click on the Scan button. Then when the program has finished scanning, click on the Clean button. The program will reboot the computer. Post the AdwCleaner log in your next reply.

    15. Download HijackThis to your desktop. Run the program and on the Main Menu click the button that says Do a system scan and save a logfile. Post the HijackThis log in your next reply.

    16. Download MiniToolBox and save it to your desktop. Run the program and when the program opens check the following boxes:

    Flush DNS
    Reset FF proxy Settings
    Reset IE Proxy Settings
    Report IE Proxy Settings
    Report FF Proxy Settings
    List content of Hosts
    List IP configuration
    List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
    List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
    List Devices (problems only)

Click the Go button and also post the MiniToolBox log in your next reply.

    17. Download and run TCP Optimizer. Save the program to your desktop and then run the program. When the program opens, on the General Settings tab under Network Adapter selection click the option that says Modify all Network Adapters. Then at the bottom of the window where it says Choose settings, select the Optimal setting and click on Apply Changes. Click on Ok to confirm the changes and when prompted reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

    18. How many processes are running in the Windows Task Manager?

    19. In your first post, you mentioned that you have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Zone Alarm installed. Windows XP already includes its own firewall which is sufficient. I would recommend uninstalling Zone Alarm as its not really needed.

Let me know how the computer is performing after following the above steps.

Thanks Evan. I will start downloading the items you mentioned. I am also working, so it may take a while longer but I'll get it done and post the things you asked for. Currently there are 41 processes running (prior to doing the above). I have made a screen copy but will wait to post only if you need it. I will take another screen copy after the above has been completed.

I have finished your long list and am pleased with how my system is running right now, but my browser is still a little finicky. I started with 41 processes running and now I'm down to 34. Woo Hoo!
I've attached the logs from the 4 programs you asked.

Notes: It looks as though Zone Alarm is still on my computer, however, I rechecked the Add/Remove and it does not show up.
xcalday is a calendar program that sits on my desktop and has never given me a problem.
Splashtop is a program that can be used with an iphone - the iphone becomes like a remote control device. It's nice when you have the screen enlarged and don't want to pop up and down clicking your mouse.

In HijackThis after performing a system scan check the following boxes:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMJPMIG8.1] C:\WINDOWS\ime\IMJP8_1\imjpmig.exe /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PHIME2002A] C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /IMEName

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [_nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [_nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'SYSTEM')

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [_nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'SYSTEM')

    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'Default user')

    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [_nltide_3] rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSectionEx nLite.inf,C,,4,N (User 'Default user')

Then click on the Fixed checked button to remove those items from your computer.

Since I still see remnants of Zone Alarm in your MiniToolBox log, download and run the Zone Alarm Cleanup Tool.

Reboot the computer after the removal process completes.

Finally, please download Security Check and save it to your desktop.

Double click on SecurityCheck.exe to run the program. Follow the onscreen instructions. Post the results of the checkup text file in your next reply.

I saw Zone Alarm showed up again in the above report log, so I went into the program files and found a folder with a Zone Alarm Firewall version 1.8.11.11; opened it and used their uninstaller. Re-ran the clean up tool and then another Security Check. Results posted below. There is still a Checkpoint folder in the programs file but it is empty so there must be something somewhere else that I cannot find.

You are running Internet Explorer 6 on your machine which is more than 10 years old. Please install Internet Explorer 8 to help keep your system secure.

For Zone Alarm search for any remnants in the following folders:

    C:\Program Files
    C:\Programs Files\Common Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data
    C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users

I don't normally recommend this, but run CCleaner and go ahead and run the Registry Cleaner included in the utility and ONLY remove items from programs that you know have been uninstalled. Make sure you backup up the registry BEFORE removing any items. Feel free to remove any temporary files using CCleaner as well. Reboot the computer after running CCleaner.

The Security Check log shows a high level of fragmentation for your hard drive. I assume you ran the Auslogics Disk Defrag utility correct?

I will update IE although I just don't use it ever.
The Auslogics Disk Defrag ran for over an hour, but I will run it again just to make sure.
I will look for those Zone Alarm files before defragging and I'll take a look at the CCleaner Registry Cleaner before actually doing anything just to make sure I can do it.

I did the CCleaner Registry Cleaner and only removed those I knew to be uninstalled. In that group were several references to Zone Alarm which were checked and fixed. I ran another disk defrag and ran another SecurityCheck but Zone Alarm is still showing up.

Ok I am not too concerned with the Zone Alarm leftovers since you already uninstalled it from the machine.

There is one last thing that I need you to check. The Security Check log shows that the Windows Security Center service is disabled. I want to make sure the Security Center Service is running on the machine. Click Start< Run and type services.msc and hit enter. When the Services window opens scroll down and locate the Security Center service. Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic and that the service shows as Started.

If it is disabled then right click on the service and click on Properties. Under Startup type set it to Automatic, click on Ok to close the properties window and then start the service.

Windows Security Center was disabled but changed and running now.
    RE: Zone Alarm
I went to My Computer C:/, explore, Program Files and CheckPoint folder is there but empty. I don't know where to find it to delete it. I went through every file on post #16. I think there might have been 1 empty Checkpoint folder.
