Since I'm retired, and will be building a new computer within a month, I can use open source workarounds till then. I'll just be more careful when I install on the new computer. Should I install Microsoft Office first or Adobe? I will shut down and then start up again after each install.

If you have paid a sub for MS Office and you have an activation key, I would install that 1st.
I think Adobe is available through MS Store isn't it? As an App.
I personally use Foxit Reader for pdf's.

I'm using older versions of both Office (Office Professional 2007) and Adobe (Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite 3), and I have the CDs and keys. I liked all the things Acrobat and Photoshop could do that I couldn't do with a standard program, but I'm not as likely to use those features in the future, so it's not a big deal. I should have all the components for my new computer by next week.

Evan, I made my own, using my son's old laptop, though reinstalled programs aren't working the way they should. Adobe isn't installing properly, and Office has to go through configuration every time I open a file.

Yes, everything was updated. I believe the programs already existed in the registry, as I disconnected my other drives before installing my new OS, so that may be what is causing the problem.

If you did a clean install of Windows 10 and deleted everything on the drive then newly installed programs should work with no issues. If you just reinstalled Windows over the top of your current system then I can see where you would run into problems with programs not installing properly.

Make sure you disconnect the other drives, delete all the partitions and perform a Clean install of Windows 10 so nothing from the old system remains on the C drive.

Since I'm building myself a new computer and will only keep this as a backup, I'll just put up with the slight glitches. I did completely wipe my C drive before doing the fresh install.

I remember having the configuration problem in the past, and I knew there was a fix. Here it is:
    C > Program Files > Common Files > Microsoft Shared > OFFICE12 > Office Setup Controller

Rename SETUP to SETUP old. That solves the problem with configuring with each file opening.

The only thing I don't have access to is Photoshop, and I don't plan to use that program in the next week.
