Okay, So, A while back my Laptop wouldnt log on anymore.
So I Reinstalled My windows XP.
Now, I have No sound, and I cant download any of my old programs like
    Paint.net
My sound was working Fine BEFORE the crash.

Here are some of my problems.

When i turn on the laptop, I get a "Generic host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close "

I found these by running eventvwr.msc.

"Windows cannot access the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Windows Update Agent because of this error.

    Program: Windows Update Agent
    File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
    User Action
    1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
    2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
    - It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
    - It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
    3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
    4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
    5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.
    Additional Data
    Error value: C000009C
    Disk type: 3 "

    ------------------------
Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module wuaueng.dll, version 7.2.6001.788, fault address 0x00158059.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

These ones were found in the "system" folder when running eventvwr.msc

The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block
    --------------------
Initialization failed because the driver device could not be created.

    --------------------------------------
I also Cannot download PHP files anymore, The only files i can download is JPG
Also, I can no longer see "special" letters, They come up as boxes now
I used to be able to all these things before the crash.

Here is my computer information from Belarc Analysis

If I find problems after a reinstallation of Windows, I look at reinstalling again. The problems only tend to hang around or get worse.

Your laptop appears to be a Gateway. You need to find details at their website or in the manual/User Guide you received with the laptop on how to reinstall Windows. Usually you need to boot to a "recovery system" at startup.

If you are happy to reinstall again and have problems, we should be able to help you find information at Gateway. Chasing bugs and errors on a new installation of Windows is not worth the effort in my opinion, a new installation should work very smoothly.

You'll first have to make sure your hardware is function correctly before doing anything else.

Check out the drive using the manufacturer's disk diagnostics:

    ExcelStore

    Fujitsu

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

Hi hawk, if you can see "Press any key to boot to CD..." the boot sequence is correct.

Not many things turn a computer off, restart, yes.

If this is all due to ongoing problems? You might need to get it opened up and cleaned out (the cooling system might be blocked).

If it won't boot to the CD, check that the CD is clean and free of dirt/marks. If you need to clean the CD disk, wipe from the centre to the exterior (not round and round, that can cause scratches in the same direction as the disk gets read). For cleaning, use warm water, a tiny amount of detergent, on say, a nasal tissue.

Is the way you are trying to boot to the disk the way Gateway recommend? Check Gateway's instructions.

    Use the Drive Fitness Test
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
You will find that if there is any physical damage on the HDD, they will tell you to get a new one (send it back for "repairs" if is still under warranty, but they won't save your data, just give you a another one that is blank).

@ Mattman, I tried to use that but it wouldn't work.

Update: I found something online called. "Driver Detective ". So I downloaded it. Its supposed to find your missing drivers. Well, When i went to run it it tells me i need "microsoft.net framework 2.0 ". I get that same error message when trying to install paint.net

But when i try to install it. It always tells me "The installation of Microsoft.NET framework 2.0 appears to have failed.

I think if i can figure out what is doing that. I can get the rest of this stuff to work.

I might not have much faith in Driver Detective. I think you will find it is not free and they will have small-print that says if they get the drivers wrong, they take no responsibility. Also, the only place you will probably get the correct drivers is at Gateway anyway.

Toxic Rainbow, you don't want to follow my suggestion of reformatting, so I don't think my offering suggestions about "patching up" your system is going to be fruitful.

Have you made the Drive Fitness Test boot disk? It may not have the correct drivers for the Gateway machine.

As far as I know, Gateway have proprietary drivers. You can install your own version of Windows, but they won't supply you with their drivers. From my point of view, you are asking us to defeat Gateways proprietary system and we won't be able to.

Look up the HDD testing system that Gateway offer. As I said, it will probably just tell you that it is "broken ".

Again, your hard drive is failing. You aren't going to fix anything until you address that. Either test your drive or replace it.

If you go to the Drive Fitness Test page, download the Drive Fitness Test User's Guide and Diskette creator for Windows OS also read the DFT installation instructions.

If you are unable to follow these instructions ask a friend of family member that is more computer savvy to do this for you.

    Here is the .iso file
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/downloads/dft32_v416_b00.iso

You probably have burning software on your computer, like Ahead Nero, EasyCD or Sonic that will burn an .iso image. You can look in Start -> All Programs and read their Help information. Otherwise there are instructions and a link to a small program here (but I recommend uninstalling the program after you finish).
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ht/burnisofile.htm

I would get a CD-R burnable disk, they are the most popular, but if it an old CD burner, it might require a CD+R disk.
