Touchpad issues on new ASUS Netbook

We just got the new unit as a probable replacement for the desk-top box my wife uses and maybe for use when traveling in the RV.

We're both having a difficult time adjusting to the touchpad as an alternative to a mouse. I see that the posts on this subject are too old to reply to and don't seem to apply to my particular brand of touchpad.

There are two issues. First is the "unintended click when hovering ". If you're not really careful when you're scrolling across to a particular function, wherever the cursor is when you lift off to move your finger back to continue the scroll, it does what I understand is a "hovering cursor click" where it assumes you stopped because that's what you were going to select. This can be a real pain. I started to write this post on the Netbook, but "hovering clicks" wiped off the first two attempts!

Second problem is that the "tap to click" function seems to pick up the slightest touch on the pad so you might end up clicking just as a result of lifting your finger off and putting it down again.

The touchpad is made by "Elan" and the included "help" software doesn't address the problem. It says that the pad is a capacitive inductance unit that actually senses the approaching finger, and there's no adjustment to tap sensitivity.

I will be getting in touch with Elan to see if there are any new versions of the driver (probable because the netbook is Windows XP) and also to ask about sensitivity and "hovering ". I'm so ticked off right now that I'm considering making a lap board that would have room for a USB laser mouse alongside the netbook, though that rather sabotages the very portable nature of the unit.


Anyone have any good ideas? Is there anything in WinXP that would stop the "hovering click "?

 

You should be able to disable the tap/click of the touch pad. I have disabled it in the past.

You might be able to adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad (just noticed Steve R Jones reply).

Look at possibilities in Control Panel (incl Asus or Elan settings).
