    Hi guys,

Need help. There are extra letters that appear when I type, even if I did not type those keys. For example, I will type "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. "

    This is what will appear:

TGhe qsuhick brown fox mjuhmps over tghe lazy dog.

BTW, i'm using acer laptop, with dual boot vista/win7.

    TIA

Took me a while to type and edit this.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Does it happen with both operating systems?
Did you make ANY type of change to the pc prior to this starting?

Sounds like a dodgy keypad (perhaps connection). Either that or you have very fat fingers :D (note the positioning of the extra characters ;) )

I'd try an external keyboard and if that works perhaps cleaning the keypad or checking the connection will save you from buying a replacement.

yes, it happens on both OS and no, I didn't. I was typing a report using Word yesterday and then after a few pages I noticed tghis. Weird huh?

To wildfire: lol, i'm quite thin. But i will try the keyboard thing at the office later today.

BTW, when i tap the key t what appears on the page is tg and when I tap u what appears is uh. More: q = qs ; u = uh. Most of the letters seem fine tho.

First thing to do is to try to change the font say to Arial and then see if it fixes it. If not see below.

Use Windows Explorer and find one of the .doc files that has the crazy characters in it.

RIGHT click on the file and choose "Open with... "

The choose WordPAD to open it.

If the characters are still weird, then it probably is a font issue. Select all the text then go to the toolbar and change the font to Arial.

If this fixes it then save and close the document.

Go to Word and open the newly saved file. It should be okay.

All other files, just change the font in Word. Using WordPAD was just a way to make sure there was not a problem with Word.

If this does not fix your problem and the characters are again crazy in Word, uninstall and reinstall Word. Or choose the Change button in Add/Remove programs and in the installation dialog select "Repair ".

A common problem, the matrix (underneath the key caps) may be damaged or simply need cleaning, not an easy job and to be honest a replacement would be a lot easier and less stressful. Try a blast of compressed air around the entire pad and check that the connection is secure.

This used to happen a lot on the old rubber keyed Spectrums (In some areas I think they were called the TI-1000 EDIT: Totally irelevant but it was the Timex 2068 and not 100% compatable  ).

I'm fairly confident an external keyboard will work but if not then it's back to Bill & Steve.
