Where do I install my two new tiny SSD 1.8's?

Hey all, I've not yet opened the W700 up to take a looksie just yet, but I will have to, as I just got an Intel 80GB 1.8 SSD in. This is not the 2.5" X25-M.

I have a second one, also 1.8. They're both indicated for the W700, amongst many others of course.

I didn't get either RAID0 or a RAID1 configured, as I have no need for either. So my question is, where do I put these two babies?? I have a hard drive caddy for my T60p, which doesn't fit into the W700 Ultrabay. I'm sure there is one for the new Thinkpad, which would hold one of those tiny size drives. I need one other spot, though, for the 3rd drive. Since Lenovo is offering RAID config's, this is obviously possible, is it not? Can anybody please help me?

    Might give you some information.

If your W700 is the same as my T400. Go to C:\Program Files\ThinkVantage\ALRN and make a shortcut to ALRN.exe. Drop it on your desktop. Read/search in Download & Upgrade.

Eh... no, AFAIK you only have two drive bays. RAID 0 and RAID 1 work with 2 drives.

Got it done. I now have three internal (I dislike external drives of any kind) drives in my W700. Two are at the left front (my 2 SSD's, and the 160GB Seagate Momentus 7200.3 is in the caddy on the right side.

I installed a 4GB chip I had lying around today, as it was exactly what the machine takes. What I've been observing is that before, I had 2GB RAM, and it only ever used up to 70% max, so around 1.4GB. I do have the 2GB version of the Intel Turbo Memory, but I hear it's not that great, and with an SSD, it may actually hurt to have it.

Anyway, so now I have 6GB of regular RAM installed, and haven't disabled with Turbo RAM, and the system is now using more the *double* of the existing RAM. Right now, for example, it is using 2.64GB, more than my T60p w/ 4GB (only 3GB addressable, though) ever used. This monster machine is just incredible. Everything is instantaneous, including a seemingly better (or better configured WiFi 802.11n card).

Any ideas what's happening with the RAM. Can I turn off the page file, considering the 6 gigs. Intel's Turbo RAM? BS? It was a 20 bucks add-on, so whatever...

That's normal for all version of Windows. Windows knows how much ram is installed and will use up a certain percentage of the total ram...Add more ram - it uses more ram;)

Heh, cool how you put it. I figured it would work like that. It's more efficient use of resources for maximum speed/power output.

Should I leave that Intel Turbo Memory enabled? Someone said to do that if I use SSD's. I don't know what one would have to do with the other...Hmmm...:?:

Don't turn off the page file because not all applications will work. Some apps contain code that specifically require use of a page file, esp games and multimedia apps.

TonyT, yup, I was thinking about turning off the paging file, but instead, I reduced it to minimum 512MB, 2,048MB max. I monitored it for a week, and it has never used more than 1GB. Sound about right?

AFAIK, Windows XP relied to a certain extent on having a reasonable page file present. Vista relied more. I expect Windows 7 relies more.

Why don't you test some higher and lower figures?

Me, I work with how Windows wants to run it.

The mattman! How are you? ;)

I just set the max usage for the page file to double of what I had (4GB). I guess it doesn't matter, or does it? I have write caching enabled on my SSD. And the cache of what is basically flash memory is always fastest. I got rid of the Intel Turbo Memory for the same reason. And then, I maxed out the RAM from 6-8GB. haha...Is there a way to force Windows to use more RAM?

By the way, what are prices of 128GB SSD's, and high-capacity and fast HDD's, some of which even include FDE (full disk encryption)?

    Thanks, Matt! ;)

C-D, I'm going well. I haven't used SSD's yet, I expect it should be similar to accessing RAM, although you can improve data throughput in RAM by using it's (Dual) Channel technology. That's for a desktop motherboard, I don't know the latest in laptop technology :)D and as I've explained before, I'm a desktop person).

Forcing Windows Page Filing system into RAM is something you could experiment with, I might (would?) expect Windows to run best at it's default settings. You might be able to "bend" it, but I would still think it would work best when it is straight :D.

I try to work with Windows, not try to bend it to my will.

Maybe not the answer you were looking for, but that's me :).

    Matt
(Encryption...firstly, can you get locked out of your own data? From what I know, encryption takes time to write and time to decipher, I just don't keep anything important on my HDD...easy...and fast ;))

    Any pictures CrunchDude

I'm thinking of getting the W700 myself, and I'm just concidering SSD options. So you've been able to put two 1,8" drives and hook them up in RAID 0, is that correct? I would just love to see a picture of your setup if you have one!
