SD slot on hard drive not detecting card

Hi, recently I thought I had fried my 2gb micro sd card because it suddenly stopped working and my computer wouldn't acknowledge it. Through purchasing a new card and seeing that fail also, I figured my usb t-flash card reader was dead. I bought a micro sd to sd adapter so that I could use the card through the SD slot on the front of my hard drive by the floppy disk slot. When I put the card in, nothing comes up in my computer. Do I need to install this SD card reader slot? My computer can read floppy disks no trouble. How do I go about making this work?

Cheers

First off a small rant, please bear with me...

It is NOT a hard drive... Call it a tower, desktop, system unit whatever... but it is NOT a hard drive.

Sorry rant finished.

What operating system are you using Vista / XP other?

What make/model computer do you have?

Did your card reader come with the system unit or was it added later? If added what make/model card reader are you using?

Hi, I was given this computer and know very little about it.I'm running XP, not sure what the other details are. If you can't help due to my lack of knowledge that is fine

The floppy drive is Sony, perhaps the rest of it is too. I'm really quite stumped :s

Ok, the computer model could be usefull but we'll try without it for the time being.

Click on Start and select Run

In the run combo type

Code:
devmgmt.msc
Now you should see a list of hardware devices connected to your computer...

Look down the left hand side and let me know what is listed with exclamtion (!) or question (?) marks.

Hi, nothing listed as unknown devices. CPU-Z results that may help are as follows.

Under the motherboard tab..

Manufacturer = MICRO-STAR INC.
Model = MS-6728

Under the CPU tab ..

Processor Name = Intel pentium 4
Code name+Northwood
Brand ID = 9

Hopefully this helps. Cheers!

OK, a couple of thoughts,

Do other USB devices work?

In device manager do you see any Universal Serial Bus HUBs/controlers listed.

Although the front card reader is present, is it actually connected internally (eg has it ever worked)?

I'm on holiday at the moment and won't be online as much as I normally am but I'll make a point of checking back tomorrow to see how it's going.

there are times that if the card reader is old, it stops working.

--

no need to re-install any drivers if you are using xp. but it might prompt you one if needed. does your xp detects your card? No? does the cable attached properly? yes? have you tried the other card slots? you only have SD card? that's a problem. my SD/MMC slot is not working thus I have to buy a new card reader (USB).

--

those are the ones i can think of right now.

Perhaps the slot is only there to look nice, and to help people who fancy going inside their computers and attaching things themelves. I've just bought a new flash card reader online and I'd say that has me covered. I can't see myself getting this SD slot to work, so it seemed like the quickest option. Thanks a lot for your help, these forums are really excellent! Enjoy the rest of your holiday wildfire, thanks again

I've lost count of the number of times I've forgotten to re-attach cables when messing about inside

It's likely there's nothing wrong with the front card reader but as you said the system is second hand so perhaps the previous owner was messing about inside?

I would have verified USB was working on the system first but let us know how you get on with the new reader when it arrives.
