Hi, I'm running Windows 2000 and my USB ports (on motherboard) recently stopped working. I'm not sure if this is an IRQ conflict, a driver problem, a hardware malfunction or what. I see a large number of USB controllers in Device Manager (2*SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Contorller, USB 2.0 Root Hub, 4*USB Root Hub, 2*VIA USB Universal Host Controller, VIA USB Enhanced Host controller), all supposedly working properly.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the VIA drivers but no go. Any tips on troubleshooting this?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

First step is to uninstall all USB controllers and root hubs through Device Manager, reboot and let Windows reload the drivers.

Nope, tried that... Windows 2000 reinstalls the same controllers and hubs, but the USBs still don't work.

Never having used W2k I can only make suggestions based on my knowledge of XP - If W2k has System Information - in XP the run command is msinfo32.exe - look under Conflicts/Sharing if Systen Information is an option for you. Also look at Problem Devices under Components.

A hardware problem is always a possibility and if no solution is found consider installing a USB card if these are available for W2k.

Thanks! I ran msinfo32 - no problem devices, but quite a lot of IRQ sharing:

    IRQ 11 RADEON 7000 SERIES
IRQ 11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 10 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
IRQ 10 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    IRQ 10 HSP56 MR
    IRQ 10 C-Media AC97 Audio Device
IRQ 10 SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
IRQ 10 VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller

    Any further suggestions on this?

A comment really - when XP was introduced the IRQ range was doubled - I believe that in some way the additional IRQ's were virtual, but suffice to say I have IRQ's down to 23.

I am in a grey area here :) One suggestion would be to disable the USB controllers one by one, start with the SIS and see if USB functionality returns. If it does your suggestion of an IRQ conflict is confirmed. That said I would think that msinfo would indicate if there were any conflicts.

I can't take this any further, certainly not at present as I am away for the rest of the week.

I hope someone else picks up on this - good luck :)

Edit - have asked another member to take a look.

How many USB ports do you physically have on the motherboard?

Edit: motherboard model may come in handy as well if you know it.

Four. The motherboard is a K7S5A Pro.

Thanks JKS, it appears that there is several versions of that board, I've downloaded the manual for revision 5.0 and that claims 10 USB, 4 on the back (which ties in with what you say) and connections on the motherboard for (up to 6) front or internal ports.

The rear ports are USB 2.0 and internal connections are for USB 1.1

Now, question is do I have the correct manual, and do you use those internal (not rear) USB connections?

Have a close look perhaps with a magnifying lens into your USB ports to make sure none of them are physically damaged. If a port gets damaged so that the connections in the port touch each other an over current condition can occur and Windows will shut the USB system off in an over current situation. Also, try unplugging ALL of your USB devices and try one at a time to see if perhaps one of your USB devices is causing an over current situation.

OK Check out Eric's post ( you may wish to check the main board USB's as well if it doesn't worry you) and if all appears ok then...

    1) Disconnect all USB devices if you can, if you must use USB keyboard/mouse then you must but PS/2 would be better for testing at least.

    2) Enter the BIOS Setup and disable USB Function Support (you'll find this in the features setup page). Remember that Keyb/Mouse though if you need them to be USB then you should skip this but try and beg/borrow/steal PS/2 if possible.

    3) This is where I'm struggling slightly (Like PeteC I've no Win 2K experience) but I'll give you the 98 way and the XP way one should work...

    a) 98/XP - Restart in safe mode
    b) 98/XP - Goto Device Manager
    c) XP - Select View and Show Hidden Devices
    d) 98/XP - Remove/Uninstall all USB devices
    e) 98/XP - shut down the computer

    4) Restart but go directly to BIOS setup

    5) In the Advanced Setup page make sure Quick Boot is disabled.

    6) Now save and exit and allow the system to reboot fully without connecting those USB devices.

    7) Shutdown and restart back into the BIOS Setup and enable USB Function Support.

    8) Restart and allow windows to reinstall drivers.

    9) Now connect your devices one at a time and give a few moments between.

Let me know if that works or you need futher assistance.
