I'm sure you guys have seen this problem multiple times, but I don't know the answer and couldn't find it while searching the forums.

Lately my machine has been taking about 10 minutes from startup --> post --> welcome screen. I'm running XP Pro with SP2. Once I'm up and going, the machine runs fine. I'm hoping there's a simple solution, but I don't know where to start.

    Thanks for any help!

When is the last time you ran Disk Cleanup and defragged the drive?

At what stage does it pause? Is it during the initial splash screens or when the Windows loading screen is running?

    Thanks for your replies guys.

As far as disk cleanup and defrag go, I do that quite regularly. I ran both again yesterday, but with little effect on startup. As far as my HDD goes, I'm only using about 6% of the drive. I also ran Hitman Pro for what it's worth.

When I first power up the machine, it will hang on the first splash screen (Asus mobo splash screen) for at least a few minutes. If I leave it alone it will eventually post. If I tab from the flash screen early on, it will post (start to post) almost immediately.

Once the machine starts posting (if I tab from the splash screen), I immediately get a message for the processor (AMD N.B.), initializing USB controller, and memory (2048 MB ok). From there posting slows to a crawl and usually requires a few minutes to finish. Once the OS splash screen appears, things move fairly quickly.

    Hope that helps. Thanks again!

When you power up, press the ESC key. What is the (last) information showing when it pauses?

Watch the LEDs for the drives, if one stays on while it pauses, I would investigate that drive. You should at least open the case pull out and reseat the connectors for all the drives. Check the jumper settings on IDE (PATA) drives (use Master/Slave as a start).

Considering there is a major pause during POST, I expect it is a problem with the BIOS "setting" hardware. You will need to start doing tests and checks on the hardware and BIOS settings.

Thanks Matt. I will give that a go Monday when I get into the office and let you know what I find out.
