Just wonder what changes will occur when I change the CPU over on the same Board.
I have a old system with a WinFast (Foxconn) K7S741MG-6L board that has currently a AMD XP1800 Palamino CPU running the board can accept up to XP3200+. I have a spare XP2400+ sitting around and wouldn't mind trying it out.
Will I need to re-install windows like if I change the mobo or will the BIOS set on Auto pick it up and do the rest without me having to do much.

Should not be a problem and should not result in the need to re-activate. Unlike a mobo which has specific drivers the driver for the CPU is already on board - in the worst case scenario a repair install of XP may be required, but I doubt it. BIOS should pick up the processor details without any intervention from you.

FYI - Windows Product Activation (WPA) on Windows XP

If you swap out the mainboard, you'll want to reinstall Windows but chances are you'll have to reactivate.

Famous last words ...... should be a piece of cake. However, I would suggest that you switch processors and then clear CMOS before you fire it up. Some boards require this in order to boot to the new CPU. Others are quite automatic and pose no problem with no user intervention necessary.

I recently rendered a rather expensive Intel MB useless with a simple BIOS call. Bought an el-cheepo Asus LGA775 something or other and used all the same stuff, memory, chip, drives - and fired right up to the old XP with no beefs at all.

For the curious one - the BIOS change that stopped the Intel D945GNT board was simple - from Default memory settings to Aggressive, and NO OTHER changes at all- will not boot since...... will not reset BIOS to default!

I've encountered a few "challenges" myself but none quite like the first ABIT KT7a RAID board I did several years ago. Took me almost 3 days to get it to a "bootable" or lets say "reliably bootable" condition. I wound up doing a lot of those boards and would still classify it as one of my all time favorite builds. I'd also put a DFI Lan Party II in the same category - not easy but once mastered, ran circles around all others.

    thanks guys, very much appreciated.
This WinFast (Foxconn) Board K7S741MG-6L would have the the shortest manual that I have ever seen. 10 pages of Easy Installation Guide and thats it, all that I could find.
