G’day, now this might appear silly to some, but I still would like to hear some comments, reasons for yes and no.
Here we go, I have changed my setup from 2 PC’s 17" CRT Monitor via Belkin KVM switch including sound, to 22" wide LCD VGA mode now I am trying for DVI mode now comes the odd part at the moment I can only use 1 PC no DVI KVM, my Monitor is performing great in DVI mode and I would like my second PC to be on DVI as well.
ATEN DVI KVM AU$250.- I am still using the Belkin KVM for Mouse Keyboard and Sound all I have done is pulled out the VGA cable and plugged in the DVI into the DVI port all works well, Now if I would use a DVI two port Switch 2 DVI in 1 DVI out to LCD with button on front to switch just like I have with my USB Printer in this case I have 3 in one out to the printer works well, this switch is only AU $35.- plus 2 DVI cables. Much cheaper than a new DVI setup use the old KVM for Keyboard Mouse and sound in conjunction with a DVI switch.
    Would it work??

    Hi hawk,

It seems you want to use two KVM switches. One for the keyboard and mouse, the other for the DVI graphics/monitor connectors.

I have not used more than one KVM and maybe not many others here have tried either.

You may be on your own with this one :)...especially depending on the manufacturer of the hardware, since they may all have their their own different methods of running the hardware.

I have found the keyboard is a key in how KVM works, because the motherboard needs to have a direct output for the keyboard. A mouse is not important. The monitor operates through the graphics card, the motherboard can operate without a monitor connected.

I believe the keyboard is the most important factor. The separate switch for the monitor I don't think would play a major role. Should work...but I would not guarantee it.

You might have to "**** it and see ", beta tester and all that stuff.

Do as much research as you can. Put the make and model number of the switch you are looking to use into a websearch and check for positive or negative feedback.

    Matt

Hi Matt, yes looks that way, not many comments, for the video I am planing to use only a switch not KVM, and yes keyboard and Mouse are being handled by the Belkin KVM and you are right Video is on its own at this moment I have 3 PC's on the KVM but neither is plugged in to the KVM for the video I can only see one screen to swap over I have to manually change video cables on the Monitor, keyboard and Mouse work fine with the KVM.
I have made several inquiries regarding switches and I have found to models that can handle 1680 X 1050 Resolutions without any problems, so it is just a matter of switching from one Monitor to the other. I have been told by the makers that two KVM in Line would not work and I don't need that.
As I have the Belkin VGA KVM I won't waste that by replacing it with a DVI KVM which is very expensive $250.- compared to the DVI Switches $36.- and $46.- respectively with a 5 year warranty.
But as you say I think I just have to go and bite the Bullet on that one, but I am too keen on it not to try.

Hi Matt, well I have now done my little experiment and I am using 1 Belkin PS2 VGA KVM for Sound - Keyboard - Mouse and I disconnect Video + 1 Manual DVI Switch with 2 PC's connected to a 22" LCD Monitor and it works great on DVI.
I retained my Original KVM Switch and purchased 1 Manual DVI Switch at the cost of $35.- compared to a DVI KVM from $250.- upwards. Only negative one more Gadget on the Desk.
The DVI Switch is Full HD capable so there is no problem with handling the native resolution of the 22" LCD 1680 x 1050.
It has been running now for 3 days with lots of switching back and forth trouble free.
    Happy as can be

Ah, so well worth investigating hawk.

I have two computers at my desk, with two monitors, mice and keyboards. You have given me the idea to use my KVM for at least the keyboard and mouse (and the option for getting a DVI switch like yours). Actually I don't have room for my second keyboard on the desk, so it sits on the tower or in my lap when I am using it.

I will set up my KVM, but I know as soon as I do, I will want to use it elsewhere :p :)

A good saving ($250 -> $35), thanks for the info.
    :)
