Take a look in the BIOS and see if it is detected there - laptop BIOS's are often limited so that may not be possible.

If the BIOS does not show the CD drive - and nor does My Computer or Device Manager a hardware failure is a possibility.

Ok, I get to that by restarting and holding F2 right?

Can't be sure which F key it would be on your laptop to allow you to enter setup - as it may be called. Generally comes up on the screen on Boot - Press F* to Enter Setup ....

If you have the manual check it out.

Ok thanks, I did that, and under the hardware tab, there was no CD/DVD rom detected, so I went to the exit tab, and clicked the Load default settings and saved changes and exited. My computer restarted and finished everything so I went to My Computer and there was a new icon there, it had some sort of drive picture, but instead of a disc next to it, there was a question mark. Then it disappeared...

Not a job I have done, but will depend on the make of laptop. Either Google for repair manual or post the make and model number here.

I would ascertain the possibility of replacing the drive yourself before trying to acquire another.

The only other possibility re. apparent failure is poor connections - would be a good idea to reseat them if you can find the way in.

I am seeking a second opinion on this in case I have missed a trick.

For repair manual read service manual.

No further suggestions from Matt, but open to suggestions from others.

:) Sorry Pete. I have only opened an odd few, but I must say that those and the service/repair manuals I have looked at make it quite easy for the CD/DVD drive to be replaced.

I would expect that all the different models have different methods for opening, so the service manual would be the best guide. I have found several manufacturer's that have them for download, but they are not necessarily included with other downloads for that model (you may need to search the laptop's Support website).

    Matt
