I have two CD-ROM drives in my desktop computer- one that came with it and one installed afterwards. They used to both work together and be on at the same time, but now at random times the one boots up and the other doesn't at all. It also happens in vice versa, which makes me think that the computer is picking and choosing which one to give power to.

I haven't changed any software on my computer, I run Windows XP SP2 on an HP Pavilion. The other drive is a Hitachi I believe. Is there a reason that they both won't work together? Suggestions?

Suggest you check the cabling - make and remake the power connections and ribbon cable connections (at both ends).

Any warnings in Device Manager under CD-ROM drives?

Remove both through Device Manager and reboot to allow Windows to reinstall.

Just curious- is the device manager the add/remove hardware program in windows or something different? If it's the add/remove hardware, there are no problems listed and both say they are working properly.

I'll try to open up the tower a little later today after I finish my homework on it and check the cables. Anything short of that I can implement until then.

Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager button - I think you were there - a question of terminology.

If checking the cables does nothing I suggest you remove the drives through Device manager and reboot.

    Please clarify .....

After booting up do you see one or the other or both of the CD-ROM drives in Windows Explorer or My Computer?
