Basically. yes, but other things to bear in mind ....

Check that your computer meets the requirements for XP ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx

Despite what Microsoft may say about the amount of memory required you will neeed 512Mb minimum if XP is to run at a reasonable speed, up to 1 Gb is preferred.

You will need to download XP drivers from manufacturers web sites for your hardware, including the chipset drivers for your motherboard (maybe). It is a good idea to do this before you start and burn to CD/DVD.

You will, of course have to reload all your programs and you may find that some of these are not compatible with XP and may need an upgrade, if available.

As you intend to change the hard drive you must back up your data to an external source (CD/DVD, etc) so that you can copy it back to the new drive.

If your computer is running Windows XP does it have either enough memory (256 mb) or extra hard drive space (about 6 gig with SP2) to install XP.
XP can be installed on Pentium 2's with enough Ram as a sales gimmick.
    It will run.
    It will browse the internet.
However the minute you add anything - antivirus , office etc. watch out.
You might want to think of Windows 2000 as less demanding system.
The key thing is that your device drivers (most importantly your network card and/or modem ) will set up.
