For some time i have been having problems off and on with what would seem to be the fan in the power supply -- used to be it just clicked in varying tones, but recently on start up it has occasionally started howling, like it is stuck and not turning at all, and at those times, there is no air blowing out of the power supply as per normal.

i would guess that the fan has sealed bearings and that there is now way that i could use a little oil on it to keep it going a little longer, or something like that to extend the life, as the power supply seems fine and i don't think that you can replace just the fan in a power supply... so anyway i can avoid replacing it for a while ?

The fan should be replaceable, but you need to heed the warning on the label about having a qualified person do it.

I suggest you ring your local computer repairer for if you could call around and show it to them (it may be a simple swap).

A new PSU is not very expensive, although I would avoid the cheap generic brands. If it is a branded system it may need to be replaced with "OEM" parts. I think it would worthwhile investigating if the fan could be replaced, unless it is already a generic brand, then it may not be worth your time and effort.

The fan parts would probably be sealed and maybe the bearing is damaged. There wouldn't be much point to try and re-lubricate it. I would check if there may be something physically jamming the blades though.

I would definitely go with a new power supply. I just bought two Sparkle 300W units (made by FSP) for about $30 each. I tried to keep my old Raidmax 400W unit going by tearing it down and replacing the fans plus cleaning out the dust. It lasted for another year before finally turned into a plasma cutter which almost melted the front of my printer. It was lucky that I was sitting next to the computer and turned it off before much further damage could occur.
