Try these keystrokes on the laptop with the monitor connected and turned on:
    ctrl-esc
    c

control panel should appear; if nothing happens tap c again followed by enter and see what happens. If any window appears, recognizable as even a part of control panel, continue as follows:
    d
    d
    enter
    shift-ctrl-tab
    alt-s

Now tap the left arrow key several times and you should see the lcd screen become smaller. Continue until it looks normal.

Thank you for the followup. I've run into a similar problem previously. It really helps to know some keystrokes. You can find them all in windows help. Use the index and look under "key" for Windows keyboard shortcuts overview.

That's good stuff - reminds us all that they are there - what a common oversight, but nice guidance too. Good Stuff!
