I used to know what the latest processor was. It was easy to tell which was the fastest. Now I am confused with all the different names. Is there a list of processors by speed somewhere on the net? I see new processors coming out at 2.2 and I had a 3.2 last year. So is a dual 2.2 faster that a non dual 3.2? I need a list.

The newest Intel cpu is the Core 2 Duo and it changes everything due to the way it processes info..

You might look on TomsHardware.com or Intel.com.

Will this also compare the AMD speed equivalent with Intel

Have a look at The Mother of All CPU Charts 2005/2006. It is a bit out dated (nov 2005) but it compares AMD with Intel, single core and dual core mixed.

It is difficult to compare single core with dual core because the processors aren't exactly the same:

The "Athlon 64 3200+ Clawhammer ", "Athlon 64 3200+ Venice" and "Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester" are running at 2.0 GHz with DDR400 RAM and they perform differently in different tests/benchmarks. (The "Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle" is running at 2.2 GHz and can not be compared.)

Compare those with the "Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester" which also runs at 2.0 GHz (2 x 2.0 GHz) with DDR400 RAM.

The designations indicate the respective performance differences but I have no idea how they reached the values. 3800/3200=1.1875 but the SiSoft Sandra benchmarks (for what they are worth) indicate between approximately 0.9 - 2.0. Yes, some benchmarks indicate that the single core is better than the dual core ... ... at the same CPU speed.

    Enjoy your read ... ;) ... !

Oh yes, it does. Scroll down a bit and find the drop down which reads "TABLE OF CONTENTS ". There are an "Overview of all AMD CPUs" and an "Overview of all Intel CPUs" and 49 other pages to enjoy ... ;) ... !

    Rock,
    you're welcome ... :) ... !

It was enough to make my head spin. My next build, for myself or someone else, will probably be a "low-end" Athlon 64 X2. That seems to be the most "bang for the bucks ".

Looking at some of those benchmarks, its still pretty tough to dismiss the FX57 (now running two - second one, $228 plus shipping) but if you are looking at a 939 X2, the 4400+ and the 4800+ are the way to go (if you can still find them). Toledo cores and two 1MB caches.

    ;)

To be honest, I don't really know how the system manages the two cores. If one is "assigned" to background processes such as FW, AV, background music and the other is "assigned" to the active program that you are working with such as video editing, DVD burning. Also if one task running on one core can nick cycles from the other such as when rendering the video. If nicking cycles isn't possible, then if you do no multi tasking, dual core is inferior.

On my old system, I really notice when LiveUpdate launches. Whatever I'm working with runs sooo sloow. Maybe that and similar effects are not as noticeable on a dual core.

    Now, I have demonstrated that I understand ... ... "nada "!

Don't feel alone, I certainly don't pretend to understand it either and my reference above to two FX57s is one in each of two boxes. I've built a few 4400+ machines and was very impressed but have spent almost no time actually test driving a dual core machine.

I've been doing some reading, among other articles Tom's Summer CPU Charts Assault which is a followup to the one linked to earlier. It seems like the prize for MBFTB (Most Bang For The Bucks) now goes to Intel Core 2 Duo. The lowest priced C2D is "as good as" the highest priced X2.

Thanks for all the information. I am building a new computer for my wife. So I wanted to get a decent processor.
I decided on "AMD Athlon 64 FX60 Socket 939 CPU" which I got for $268. I thought this was a good choice under $300. let me know what you-all think please.

    Hi Ron,
since no one else chips in, I'll do it.

I seems to be "a good deal" and performance wise, I think it qualifies as a "decent processor "! They quote the price to be in the $600 - $1000 range.

What else is on the shopping list?

    Ron,
I agree with almost everything on that shopping list. What I am concerned about is that your name and address have been posted. I suggest that you remove the attachment, edit out your personal details and reattach the "edited" file.

I said "I agree with almost everything" and the item I want to discuss is the memory. The processor is dual core and the motherboard supports dual channel memory. I would have opted for 2 x 512 MB rather than 1 x 1024 MB.

I have a slice of 1024 MB sitting on my desk at home.
    So I will be using 2 X 1024 MB

    Hi Christer,
I went for a Socket 939 Athlon 64 x2 4200 totally blind as to the way they work, and I was pleasantly surprised. It cut the time for some of the filter applications in Photoshop by about 30%, and running Vista with a CPU monitor in the sidebar, I see that even with no multi-tasking, both cores are working at the same time, and at moments both can be running at 100%! That does explain the performance improvement.
As a matter of interest, it cost 200€.

    Roger:)
