Welcome aboard, glad to have you.

Does your computer boot into windows?
When do you get the message?
Who replaced the HDD? Was windows installed on the new hard drive with recovery disks?

Here is one thing that has worked for me.

Go to your device manager and go down to the usb controllers and un-install all of them. Reboot the computer and the usb controllers will be rebuilt automatically.

As far as the media cable is concerned. I don't know. I don't have a laptop. Someone will come along and give you a hand with that...

check media cable part 4! (the pithy retort!)

[FONT= "Comic Sans MS"][SIZE= "3"]ok, i uninstalled all the usb controllers and tried to reinstall when i rebooted and it could not find the drivers? it would not reinstall automatically and i do not know what to do next?  any help appreciated:D
also it still has power in the usbs cos the fan i have running is connected by usb and is still working? so the problem must be elsewhere?
right before it says 'media test failure ; check cable' it automatically starts intel boot agent? i was wondering if it is corrupted and is causing the problem? i cannot seem to enter BIOS? to change the order of boot. any suggestions?

Your USB could be turned off in the BIOS. The only reason I can think of that would cause Windows to not put the USB back is if it doesn't know you have USB.

Does your My Computer>Properties>General Tab say Windows Xp service pack 2?

If you have a recovery disk that came with your Laptop, the drivers are probably there.

You paid those people for their service and it looks like they did some shoddy work. I think I would take it back to them to make it right. They may want to void any warranty if the case were opened.;)

Looks like we were posting at the same time.

My entry to BIOS is the Del key. Different Mfgs. use different keys. I just hit the Del key as soon as I see some writing on the screen. It doesn't come up immediately, takes a few seconds. Have you ever been able to get into the BIOS?

[FONT= "Comic Sans MS"][SIZE= "3"]i don't think a complete recovery will fix the media cable? it's already been done? i was hoping for advice in how to open my laptop, it was unscrewed yet would not yeild to my frustrated attempts to pull apart! :( also, how can i find this misterious and hidden (hidden so you would have to pay someone to fix it? ) media cable and what can i do to fix it?
i did ask them to fix the cable but it was not on the receipt that they were meant to do it?

As far as the E61 goes, I think a trip to the Toshiba web site may yield some answers about their error codes. The only thing I can think of on the "media cable" thing is some sort of cable having to do with the webcam you were installing. Makes me wonder whether they put in a new hard drive or not. Did they also install your webcam?

Not being able to see your Laptop I have no idea how to get into it. It is probably a good thing.

Did you check to see if you have SP2?

    Hi,
This is the drivers (update utility) for the USB, etc on your Tectra A2:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...ineID=ccceaddjddejeddcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0&ct=DL

    This is the support webpage:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...0&moid=651096&smoid=true&ct=MH&ListType=Model

The laptop will not be able to supply very much power to the USB system and I think that if you read the User Guide on the subject it will say that additional power is needed for anything except light USB devices. You will probably need to add a self-powered USB Hub.

    To enter the BIOS settings:
Let us know if you get stuck.

check media cable part 6! (the pithy retort part3!)

[FONT= "Comic Sans MS"][SIZE= "3"]yes i have sp2, the operating system is working great, fixed most of it myself.
will check the site but did call them and ask and was told that it was going to cost £57 for an engineer to pick up, whether or not they'll fix it! and if they did fix it there'll be charges!
not in the habit of forking out so much for not even a promise!
might as well get myself a new one! jeeze!
got a knowledgable friend who's a bit baffled and his descrption of how to find the cable was quite vague and as you can read, unusable!:D why wasn't i able to separate the bottom and top of my laptop after unscrewing 40 million bitty screws?
i'm using wireless lan would that pose any problems with the boot priority?

check media cable part 7(the saga continues!)

[FONT= "Comic Sans MS"][SIZE= "3"]ok, i found the toshiba folder containing the program allowing me to change the boot priority (thank you for reminding me about it!) and i don't have the error messege anymore it boots straight to windows!:D
i installed both updates easily and again had the found new hardware popup. it tried to find drivers for my usb controllers and came up empty:(
so, to reiterate, the check media cable page has finally GONE!:D
but, the usb ports on my laptop are still unusable:(
thanks for fixing half my problem(more than i hoped!)
any ideas for this little wrinkle?:D

That's strange for an Intel chipset system. Try Bill Moore's suggestion of uninstalling the USB controllers again. Maybe there is an incorrect file (version) in the drivers.

Good to hear we are making some progress:)

It sounds like a driver problem, but if should all else fail you can get a USB add-in card (PCMCIA, I think they call it).

    continuing ad infinitum!

[FONT= "Comic Sans MS"][SIZE= "3"]thanks for the suggestion but how can i uninstall the usb controllers from the device manager when they've already been uninstalled and cannot be reinstalled?
i didn't mean my usb devices, but the usb controllers in the device manager.
i think these need to be installed first before i can try to add my usb hubs?
    then my printer, camera, flashpen...etc. am i right?:confused::eek: :D

You should see a listing for the USB controllers, but they will have a message that the drivers are not installed or are not working correctly.

If the Add Hardware wizard asks where to find the drivers, see if you can direct it to where the "Chipset Installation Utility" files were unzipped/decompressed. It will be looking for a .inf file for the USB.

Don't worry about "uninstalling" the device. The drivers/USB system is not working now, so try whatever you want to get them to install.

I have to go out for most of the day now, I will have to catch up later.

If you have anything connected to the USB ports, disconnect them. I also wonder if that means Windows is trying to connect to the Windows Update website to find drivers.

    Try this:
Do a search of your C: drive for usb. The files will have other lettering (like USBxyz.inf) and different extensions (like .sys and .inf). Make a note of the location of files with the extension .inf. The files you will be looking for will have a Date Modified in 2003. Try directing the Add Hardware wizard to those folders.

You will need to uninstall any USB controllers in Device Manager and reboot again. You can uninstall everything listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, once the main controllers are uninstalled all the other USB devices will be reinstalled at some stage anyway.

Installing drivers can be a BIG PITA sometimes. Doing the Hokey-Pokey and trying different methods of running the wizard is sometimes the only way to get Windows to recognize and install them correctly.

    Hope you have some luck.

    Matt
