Just bought this new toy. Have it all set up and plugged in and seems to be ok. Now, when I go to click on "Microsoft LifeCam" icon, it says "connecting" and then says "Initialization Error ". Not sure what that means? And of course, no "book" came with it, just the microsoft "help" site...which I can never figure out. Any ideas?

It may have a driver problem. Windows XP? When you connect it to the USB system when Windows is running, does Windows identify it correctly?. Another place to see if it is identified correctly is when you use "safely remove usb device" in the system tray. It should be listed as a Lifecam or even vx-6000.

The other thing I seem to remember is that they need a messenger service to run on, like MS Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. Check if there are any settings to enable the webcam in your Messenger program.

I know it is important with running them on Win 98, but check that you have DirectX 9.0c. Enter dxdiag at the Start -> Run command line.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the software and check if there are drivers to be installed.

I will try to find the Microsoft website.

There are no results for a search for "initialization error" at MS.

The only download appears to be the software you mention.

    System Requirements:
Those do not seem strict unless you are not running Win XP.

If you have no further success, I suggest you look at updating or reinstalling your motherboard/chipset or USB drivers.
