    Hi there--
Slowly over time my computer stopped recognizing memory sticks. It recognizes something is plugged in but says it's an unknown USB device and needs a driver.

Why would this happen? Where do I get a memory stick driver?

    THANKS!!

Kevin - Welcome to the Board :)

If you are running XP you do not need a driver for memory sticks - XP will recognise them. On the other hand if you are running 98 then drivers are required and can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site.

However as this is a problem which has become more frequent it may not be a stick driver problem at all, so, first off let us know which OS you are running.

    Running Windows XP

I'm running Windows XP. The memory sticks are still not recognized. The little USB icon appears in the task bar and when clicked it says "USB Device not recognized. "

What could be causing this? How could it be repaired?
Any ideas and thoughts would be greatly appreciated! :)

    Thanks!

Have you tried reading suspect USB memory stick(s) in a different computer, preferable running XP?

    Tried them in other computers

    Hi there--
I have tried the memory sticks in other computers, so I know they are fine. It's definitely the computer itself that has the problem.

    Thanks for your help...

At least a couple of possibilities ....

There may be a mechanical problem with the USB port(s) - guess you have tried all USB ports?

Equally there may be a driver problem with the USB ports. I suggest you go into Device Manager and uninstall/remove all the entries under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and reboot to reinstall them.
