My daughters computer will not boot into XP. She recieves the error stating that a file is missing ( hal.dll) to try to shorten this post this is what I did. The computer will not boot. I cannot go into setup nor can I go to the recovery console. Obviously the boot.ini file is corrupted so I attempted to run bootfix but still would not work.
I then decided to remove her harddrive, make it a slave and install into another computer running same operating system ( doing this to attempt to edit boot.ini file). I checked all the setting in CMOS (ok). Start computer and it boots okay until a window comes up that says "checking file system D:(which is 2nd drive) tpye of file system fat32. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel, but is recommended you continue" If I continue the check stays at 0% If I opt out the windows desktop appears but windows hangs at that point. Any ideas on why I can't load or why windows hangs.

    hall.dll - Hardware Abstraction Layer.
The command you should be using is bootcfg, see here

Your second approach is on the right lines, but I have no idea why CHKDSK will not run or Windows hangs :( . The method is explained at the end of this article under Update. Have you connected the drive as cable select?

    Hard drive question

Yes i did use cable select. I also did use BOOTCFG however i keep getting the parameter is not correct. The drive is not making noise as some that fail do, but I wonder if hard drive failure might be the problem?

I have to ask the question - did you insert the space between bootcfg and /list - bootcfg /list
It's a possibility - most hard drive manufacturers have a downloadable diagnostic program which can be run from a floppy on boot - worth looking into?

Did you install or update anything recently (just prior to this problem)?

Actually I'm Not certain that I had the space. I will look into hard drive diagnostics( good point).
NETDOC: daughter did say she had updated virus definitions the previous night. Crash did happen on next boot.
