Not sure if this is the same problem as was address here in the post with the subject "erractic cursor ". But here's the problem...

It usually starts when I first boot up. The mouse cursor stays in the middle of the screen as usual, and then as the boot up goes on, the cursor begins jumping around all over the place like greased lightening, then when it finally stops, it'll work normally for an undetermined amount of time before it starts going crazy again.

Then another thing it'll do is jump to either the right or left hand side of the screen and stay there, and I can only make it move up and down on the side of the screen it decides to "stick" to. This part of it can sometimes last from a few seconds up to a minute or two before it finally "lets go" and starts working normally again, or starts it's erractic jerking around again.

This problem has been going on for quite some time, (can't say exactly for how long) then it stopped doing it for a while, and just recently started up again. Needless to say this is "extremely" annoying. So any help or advice anyone here can give me to clear this problem up would be really appreciated.

Just to let you know in advance, I tried un installing and re installing my mouse driver and it didn't solve the problem.

    I'm using Windows 98

    Thanks.

    -Dave

Dave: I don't know if this will help but I had a similar intermittant problem some time ago with the mouse staying to one side of the screen. Like you I reinstalled mouse, bought a new mouse, still had problem. Finally in a fit of anger  I grabbed the mouse and made about 200 circuits around the screen, back and forth, up and down, round and round. Voila!!! cured the mouse problem, and hasn't come back. Maybe I just scared the be-jeez's out of it!!!!.

On a more serious note, have you cleaned the mouse rollers/ball etc. lately?

Thanks a bunch for the advice John. :)

I tried what you said, but unfortunately it didn't work.

But on a hunch, I tried re installing Direct X and it seems to have fixed the problem. :D

    Thanks again,
    -Dave

Glad you got it working. I will have to remember your fix. Thanks.

Well, wouldn't you know it John? When all seemed to be working well, guess what happened? The cursor started it's erratic behavior all over again.

So don't count Direct X as a fix for this problem.

Also, don't try downloading Macromedia Flash, Shockwave player, or Microsoft Virtual Machine. Because I tried doing all of that too, and this stupid cursor continues to drive me crazy!

So if there's anyone out there who has any idea what could be causing this, please let me know how to fix it, because I'm about at the end of my rope with this.

    Thanks,
    -Dave

Gads! I hope that doesn't happen to me! I've seen that email that has the prompt Click Here. When you try, the icon runs away from you. That sounds like what is happening. Could it be a virus? Anybody?

What kind of mouse are you using, p'ink? Is it wireless? Anything special? I couldn't help you. But I'd love to follow this thread 'til its fixed.

    Hi poetink:
Just out of curiosity? Have you done a recent and updated virus scan?
Maybe start with one of the free online virus scanners if not?

    Grisoft
    Housecall
    Panda
    Symantec

    And for Trojans.....might I suggest:
    Tauscan

Is it maybe possible that, as a jolly jape, someone has added a program such as this to your startup list?

Nope, it's nothing special. It's not wireless either. It's a Logitech 3 button mouse. I've had it for over a year and even though as I said in my initial post that this problem has been happening for quite some time, it did stop for a while, and only recently started up again.

As a matter of fact, I just finished going to that "housecall" site, and after scanning my entire computer, it came up empty. Which gives me mixed feelings, because on the one hand, I'm glad that I don't have a virus. But on the other hand, if it had found a virus, at least that could have been the answer to this annoying problem.

By the way, I see that Tauscan link you put up says that it's for trojan viruses. Does that mean that the housecall one doesn't scan for trojans?

I'd like to know before I try Tauscan, because if housecall did scan for trojans, then there would of course be no reason to scan my computer again since housecall already found nothing.

A virus scanner will detect a limited number of trojans. A dedicated trojan scanner will detect many more. BTW, did you look at the link in my previous post? There are quite a few similar "gags" available. Does unything unusual show up if you hit ctrl-alt-del?

Nope, not possible. It's only me and my older brother who use the computer, and if he had downloaded that program as a joke, he would have let me know about it by now. And neither one of us could have downloaded it from an email attachment because I know I haven't downloaded any attachments, and my brother says he hasn't either.

But just to be safe, I did a scan for "mousemove" on my computer and nothing came up with that name. So that eliminates that. :(

I see. Well, maybe I'll give Tauscan a try too.

Nope. Everything looks to be in order there.

Thanks for explaining bout the trojans Brett

poetink? Have you tried turning down your hardware acceleration?
(right click My computer....choose properties......then performance tab..and then click on the graphics button?) See if turning it down a couple of notches changes anything?

No I haven't tried that Daizy. But you saying that made me think about a program I installed called "Net Booster" So long story short, I un installed it, re booted, and (so far) the cursor is behaving itself. But if it does start up again, I will definitely try lowering the hardware acceleration. So thanks for the alternate option. :)

I have both a USB Mouse and a PS2 Trackball installed. My cursor was behaving badly. And so was the USB printer.

Put the printer back on the parallel printer port. WINDOWS ( not me ) re-installed the pointing devices again and all is well.

This was just a day or two ago.

Just to let you all know. After un installing that "Net Booster" program, my cursor decided to start dancing around the screen again. :p

So Daizy, I lowered my hardware acceleration one notch (mainly because one notch below full acceleration specified that that setting is for problems with the mouse pointer) And after re booting, so far so good. So hopefully this will end the case of my "posessed" mouse cursor.

If it starts up again, I may actually consider getting an exorcist! ;)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you poetink! :D
Btw....thanks so much for taking the time to post back after everyone's suggestions? That sure helps speed along the troubleshooting end of it greatly!

    *edit*
Just thought of something? If you've got or had a net booster program on yoru computer? You might want to run Adaware to check for spyware on your machine? I'm not saying yours has it..but I know quite a few do come bundled with it?

If lowering the hardware acceleration does the trick you might want check the website of your video card manufacturer to see if there's a newer driver available.

Well, it seems that lowering the hardware acceleration didn't do the trick cause the cursor is still acting as erratic as ever.

I am totally at my wits end with this. Last night, it got so bad that when it once again flew around the screen and then did it's other "trick" of lodging itself to the left side of the screen where I can only then make the cursor move up and down even if I try moving it left or right, it stayed there for what I swear had to be a full 3 or 4 minutes before it finally un lodged itself from there.

It also likes to sometimes stick itself from the left side of the screen to the right side and stays there for undetermined amounts of time.

As for updating my video card driver, I really don't even know what brand of video card I have. My computer was custom built 3 years ago and I never got the low down on what brands of what was installed in here. So is there a way for me to find out what the brand of the video card is? Where can I find that out in Windows?

In the mean time, if anyone else has any other suggestions on what could be causing this and how it might be fixed, please post them.

Thanks for the help and advice so far everyone,
    -Dave
