    Dear All,

Hope I'm in the right "section" with this query.

I have an Epson Perfection 610 Scanner. Bought it Sept 2000. I don't use it all that often.

A few months ago I had something I wanted to scan. Went into "Presto ! Page Manager for EPSON ", as usual, and clicked on the "acquire" icon. Got window headed "EPSON TWAIN L" which showed the message "Scanner not ready. Check that the scanner is turned on ". It was. I clicked "OK ". Another window appeared headed "Page Manager" which showed the message "Error Opening Data Source ".

Spoke to an "Epson" tech who said it was a driver problem and I would have to reinstall it from my "EPSON Perfection 610 Scanner Software CD-ROM ". I asked why this problem had occurred and was told "it was just one of those things ".

He told me to do the following:-

Start> Settings> Control Panel> Scanners. From the window that appears remove the relevant Scanner entry. Restart computer. Windows announces it has found some new hardware and will install the software. It instructs me to insert my software disk. When the next dialogue box appears I must ensure that the drive entry is "E:\EPSON\ENGLISH\WIN98 ". Click OK then complete the subsequent "Screen Calibration" window.

I did all this and, low and behold, my scanner is now working fine.

I spend the next few days congratulating myself but then try and scan something and find my scanner is not working again ! I go through the above rigmarole again and scanner works fine, again.

I've been through this chain of events umpteen times. When I want to scan something and I haven't used scanner for a few days, 9 times out of 10 I have to reinstall driver files. It's becoming a bit of a pain.

Can someone tell me why the situation is so "unstable" and advise whether there is anything I can do to avoid all this nonsense almost every time I want to scan something ?

Your comments would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks. Graham

After checking at Epson I see they have a new Twain driver V5.53 for download as of 2/26/02. You may want to give that a try. If you are using 98SE and a AMD CPU with a VIA USB controller you may need this fix.

    Dear Russ,

Went to "Epson" and nav to "North American" sub site. Downloaded Twain Driver v5.53A -- no problem. Installed OK and scanner is now using it. Touch wood, no problems so far. Seems to be working fine. It's even got an auto mode which I didn't have before.

Also, downloaded and ran "fix" from Microsoft.

You might be interested to know that if you go to the European Epson site the driver version available is 5.51e dated 10.20.01 !! I suppose we'll catch up with you one day !

    Thanks again for your assistance.

    Regards. Graham
