Uninstalled SP2, unable to use SP1 restore points.

I uninstalled SP2 after it caused me problems with my USB 2 card reader. The reader is supposed to work with Microsoft's XP drivers. After uninstall I had numerous problems with programs that worked fine previously with both SP1 and SP2. The card reader worked again, but this time I got the message that I had a high speed device plugged into a low speed USB port. Just not the case. Tried restoring the system to quite a number of different restore points prior to SP2, as Microsoft suggests, but each time the restore failed. The only message was something like "Unable to complete restore, try another restore point." Reinstalled SP2 and all is OK again, except the card reader still does not work properly. Anyone else find that you could not use old SP1 restore points after uninstalling SP2?

Can't help with the restore point issue but a suggestion about the USB device - try plugging into a different USB port and if you have them both front & rear, try switching from the set you are using now to the other set.

If that fails, check to make sure you have the latest drivers and then uninstall your USB from device manager, reboot, and let it reinstall. If you did find new drivers, use them.

Thanks for the reply Newt. Tried switching ports already and this thing is designed to use the Microsoft driver that XP chooses for it when it is plugged in. As I said, worked great before SP2. I did discover a work around. If I boot up with out the card reader and then plug it in, it reads Compact Flash and Smart Media cards. A small annoyance if I decide I want to use the reader and it was already connected when I booted. Must mean that it fails to be initialized properly on boot up. There is probably a cure by tweaking the registry, but I don't know where to begin. I have already tried Norton and Registry First Aid and REG Seeker. I don't even know who made this thing since all the markings were on a panel and bracket designed to go into a drive bay. I got rid of all that hardware so I could put it on the end of a cable where it is more convenient to reach. No markings on the molded case except USB 2 and made in China. Seems to me that I remember the chip was made by ALi. Guess I will have to buy another one. Microsoft is two bitting me to death. First it was programs and hardware (and all the related headaches) that would no longer work with XP, now this. Such is the price of progress.

    Glad you found a work-around.

I'm moving this thread to the hardware section since someone there may have an idea and some of the hardware guru's never look in this section of the forum.

usb not recognised after installing xp sp2

    Hi,
Yesterday i had the same problem with a canon multi function usb printer. After installing xp sp2 the pc didnt recognize usb anymore. Tried to update the drivers with no result. The reason installing sp2 was that no floppy or cd rom drive was recognised anymore and a lot of spyware was on the machine but at that time the printer was functioning.

    Any ideas?
