That's the character Newt, and yes my keyboard is set to UK. The problem being that there are three characters on that key.

With a text editor loaded (Notepad, Word or ?) some things you can try:

Press the key by itself, what is the character showing?
    Press the Shift+Key, ditto?
    Press the Alt+Key, ditto?
    Press the Alt+Shift+Key, ditto?
    Press the Ctrl+Shift+Key, ditto?
    Press the Ctrl+Key, ditto?

Try some other combinations of keys, maybe you will luck out. :)

    Found this. Hope it helps.

AltGr means "Alt Graphics" and it is the international equivalent of the right-side Alt key. Hold it down to type accented vowels (Ã*èìòù), remapped punctuation (`~#[]{}\|) and other characters. If your keyboard does not have an AltGr key or a right-side Alt key, you can use Ctrl+Alt instead.

Thank you all once again for your help, and it was the "Alt Gr" key that sorted it out. Strangely though when I use the key I get this ¦Â¦Ã‚¦Ã‚¦Ã‚¦Ã‚¦ but when pressing the¦ key I get ||||||||. This happens on both my systems, but I can happily with that. :)

Guess you also noticed that the '4' key has three characters on it - AltGr + 4 gives the Euro sign € - on my MS keyboard at least :)

I also get ¦Â¦Ã‚¦ and ||| reversed on the keyboard, but I can't recall ever using these characters - something to do with the UK keyboard code maybe - or a hang over from IBM?

    Dave

In all my years of using PC's I was not aware of the AltGr function for accented vowels - thanks for that :D

Hey, I didn't even know there was an AltGr key! I don't have one. Like I said, I found it. Course that was about 20 pages and three links deep........ Glad it helped!

It was only wanting to add the "F" word ending in |< used by a spammer that caused me to use it, as I wanted to add the word to my spam filter list. I have never needed to use the € symbol either, but thanks to you Dave, I have a little more knowledge to perhaps help someone else out.

BTW..........I do find it strange that this problem has not been picked up by M$ as I am running Win2000 on my other system, so presumably they must be using the same UK keyboard code in XP.

Sorry to hear you do not have an "Alt Gr" Dave, and after sorting my problem out. The least I can do is take one off an old keyboard I have here and send it to you if you want to give me your address. :D
