    Big Problem Please help!!!

While my son was playing Everquest last night he crashed and got the following message:
1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure. Your hard drive is detecting an imminent faillure. To ensure no data loss, back up contents and replace this hard disk. Attribute Failed: #10

    What are my options?

It's not pinin,' it's passed on! This drive is no more! It has ceased to be! It's expired and gone to meet its maker! This is a late drive! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! Its processes are of interest only to historians! It's hopped the twig! It's shuffled off this mortal coil! It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible! This.... is an EX-HARD DRIVE!

... or, at least, it soon will be an ex-drive ... so do as the message says!

    sniff sniff

Can I get a second opinion? And seeing as I put "beginner" as my puter experience. What is my next step. A things to keep in mind.

    It's a Compaq Presario
I can't find the disks (could probably send for them)
It's less than 2 years old and I have have a 3 yr warranty with Best buy. Not sure what that covers.

    Hi ksteele!

A friend of mine has a Compaq Presario LapTop. Two weeks after he bought it, he had a similar message every time he started the computer.
Due to his working situation he had no opportunity to go get it checked by the seller and a week later the message didn´t return ...... for a while ...... and then came back ...... and went away ..... ...... and so on.

Nothing showed up when running chkdsk and since the behaviour isn´t consistent, there´s the possibility that it´s Compaqs own security system or whatever they call it, that is acting up.

He makes regular backups of his data and uses Ghost to backup the system partition but I´ll probably have to kick his butt down to the store to get it fixed while it´s still under warranty.

As I mentioned, his computer is brand new, well, not anymore but it started misbehaving right away.

    How old is Your computer?

    Have You run chkdsk?

Is the error message consistent or intermittent?

Under all circumstances: BACKUP whatever is important to You!

    hmmmm

The computer is 19 months old. It won't go beyond that message. Won't boot up. I haven't backed up anything and I can't find my disks. So now what do you suggest?

Take it back to Best Buy and let them deal with it or if you can get into BIOS setup see if you can turn off SMART. If you can turn off SMART download and run the hard drive utilities from the drive manufacturer's web site to see if the drive is working correctly.

Just call Best Buy, you should have their number in your paperwork on the warranty, they will take care of everything. I had to call them twice and both times they sent someone to my house the very next day; once to replace a motherboard and the other to replace a hard drive. That is what the warranty is for.

    Thanks

Thanks Marty.I've started doing that. I've already got that in motion. I couldn't find my paperwork so I called their 800 number and they are sending that info to me.

One more question. Does anyone know if I've already lost everything on the hard drive?

Almost certainly not. In fact, if you follow Rod’s suggestions, it’s quite possible that you’ll be able to boot to Windows

    Rond's suggestion

I don't know what the bios is let alone how to get in it. I am, however, very good at following directions. Do you think this is something I can do with help. And can anyone give me step by step instructions?

I can't give you specific instructions - but you should find it quite easy. Tap the F10 key whilst the computer is booting and you'll arrive at the BIOS screen. Once there, simply look for a SMART option and change the setting from enabled to disabled. Maybe somebody with a Compaq will be able to provide more specific instructions?

    Bios

I tried hitting F10 to disable "SMART" as suggested. But I couldn't find the word SMART anywhere. The bar across the top had the following:
    FILE STORAGE SECURITY POWER ADVANCED

    ksteele,

You are not at criscis point....it only seems that way.

Unless you get VERY SPECIFIC guidance in relation to the Bios its best you keep outa there as you could easily make things a LOT-LOT worse than they are now.

Just keep chasing up Best Buy until you get satisfactory respones from them.

Between now and then......edit your posting as Newt suggests and rename it to reflect the specific problem which hopefully will attract more informed people.

A friend suggested I hook the hard drive up to this computer as a slave to salvage files. Any thoughts on that? Is it "do-able "? It could be as much as a few weeks waiting on the warranty info before I can get it looked at.

You said this computer...I take it you mean his.

Sounds like a logical and dooable deed your friend is offering. in that you are fortunate.

If your friend is knowledgable all you need to do is to pull all the cords outa the back of your computer and carry it carefully..to his/her place and let them take it from there.

You'll still have to get yourself another drive it seems..so best check with your mate as to what they will put your HD content on and how they will transfer it to your new HD.

I had a similar problem a little while back. I had a catastrophic failure of the HDD and the problem turned out to be an outdated driver. It might be cheaper to check if this particular item of software needs a new driver.

Get your data out ASAP - the rest can wait!

Several methods, in order of decreasing ease:

    - Burn it on CD

    - Network PC to another comp if you have a network card. Remmember to
    * Use a "crossover" cable if you do a direct pc-to-pc link without a hub. You may use a normal cable and get a crossover plug (a useful thing to have anyway).
    * Go to Network properties and add the IPX/SPX protocol (easier than using TCP/IP) and make sure the other comp has IPX/SPX too
    * Give your computer a name, and a workgroup like the other comp's (in Identification)
    * activate "sharing "
    * reboot
    * go to your HD, properties, share for reading.
    * you may have to reboot, do it with the cable inserted
At this point, the other PC should be able to read and copy out all data you want. DATA, not system. You may need Norton Ghost if you have played with the system, installed a lot of software, and don't want to reconfigure everything again.

    - Physicall move sick drive out of your PC. WARNING! If the comp is sealed, you may void the warranty!!!!! The plus side is, if you move YOUR hd out and onto another PC as slave, you may then copy the whole system and reverse the process if you get a new HD. !!!!! Same warranty warning applies there too - and THEY should pay for the replacement HD if needed.

Seals are one reason I never buy brand PCs and go for assembled instead.
