    ANY HELP WELCOME
I have just put together a system from parts left over from my main computer upgrade. The board is a 5114VU which I got second hand. I switched on the unit and it did its own thing then I fed it win 98 bootup disc and win98 system disc, I got as far as just about to start loading 98 when a message came up saying setup program could not be found. So I try again but now it keeps asking for a SYSTEMS DISC and any disc you put in it says INVALID DISC. Now a systems disc to me is the one that comes with the board as a CD ROM (which I did not get with the board)
But at this early stage in firing up this would have to be a FLOPPY DISC. At the start I press DELETE then F10 to get into SETUP but nothing happens its as if setup BIOS is not loaded.
Has anybody got a clue as to whats going on:confused:

    Neil

A little bit more info please ..........
Like what exactly - did POST run, did the computer beep at you ............... ?????

System disk is a Windows system disk with some basic DOS files on it like command.com, etc - e g a boot disc.

Are you trying to load 98 from a CD or floppies?

Are you saying that you cannot get into the BIOS? Hit Del only - motherboard manual here

Do you know if this mobo actually functions?

Check the CMOS battery - it may be on it's way out

A simple work around for this. Open Notepad, type the line X:\win98\setup.exe where X is the drive letter for the CD in dos, then Save As "runset.bat ", be sure to use the quotes so the file does not end up saved as runset.bat.txt, copy the file from My Documents or wherever you saved it onto the start floppy, it should fit. It must have the BAT extension to work.
When the start floppy has completely loaded, just type in runset and press Enter, the file will be called up and setup will be run for you.
    EDIT
Note, make sure write protection is off when copying the file onto the floppy, you cannot see through both holes if it is off.

With strange things occuring like those, ie., drive/keyboard problems, I would think that something was not right in the hardware setup.

Have you changed/installed more RAM? I would check this out first. It may just need to be reseated.

Check the IDE master/slave settings for the drives (reseat the cables).

I would want to make sure that all the hardware was set up and recognised by the BIOS before trying to install Windows...or the number of problems will only increase the further you go.

    Hi,
Thanks MARKP62 that line of command you suggested did the trick. I am up and running to a certain extent. My modem is set up correctly and it connects to the server BUT it will not connect to the internet pages nor will outlook express connect. Even when I put a CD ROM into the drive (WIN98sec) it will not find files automatically, I have to find them manually.
As to MATTMAN's posting reply (THANKS) Yes the bios does recognises everything, just to remind you this is a system I have just built, the MOBO is a MITAC 5114VU (Grrrrrrrrrr) I have found alot of info on another support site like this one and by the sounds of it this board is a SH-- one. All the problems I have had someone has had too, some of which have been solved and others not. One of which there does not seem to be a pin onboard for the case speaker. At the moment I am going to uninstall DIALUP WORKING and reinstall manually file by file.

You may need to install the motherboard drivers. Take a look at this page on Google. Some good hits on several types of drivers and manuals are listed.

Thanks MARKP62, I have loaded those drivers, but for some reason my system is not happy with the MITAC vidio driver it keeps wanting to go back to the windows driver.
Many problems but can only solve one at a time.

I finely managed to get this system up and running by fdisking and starting from the beginning only this time I loaded windows manually. But then I updated windows with windows update site "OK" the down load was finnished then restart the computer it then goes onto setup the system with the new settings BUT the system freezes half way into the setup and it does this every time I try to reboot, I can't get anywhere now.
    Any suggestions.

Can you get to Safe Mode? If you can check Device Manager for problems. Sounds to me like the system is having real problems with hardware, maybe even just one piece of hardware. Try disconnecting everything that is not required for boot, then if you get to Normal Mode add one piece back at a time...even RAM, just go back to minimum if you have several sticks.

Another area may be how the BIOS sees the harddrive. Run some utilities from the HD manufacturer.

Thanks mattman, This may help you with my problem.
When the system freezes and I do CTRL/ALT/DEL I get this message winodlap NOT RESPONDING
    msgsrv32 NOT RESPONDING
Also when I go into BIOS setup there is very little info displayed and there does not seem to be any CMOS settings like even the time clock settings.
I have the mobo manual but most of it can not be found in BIOS setup. The manual itself is not very good there is no actual settings listed.

    HELP!

    Neil,

    Some info here:
    http://www.lanyoncomputers.com.au/corner/post.jsp?post=5358

These boards were used in Compaq machines. May explain the strange BIOS and why it is so hard to get hardware to work.

You may be able get information from the BIOS string, it should be on the second screen. If there is a splash screen at the start press Esc then the Pause key to see the screens one at a time.

Hope this may save you some frustration:mad: .

Hi, It's about time I posted a reply but I wanted to be sure that my system was running ok this time. All the time the problem seems to have been a U/S ram stick (IT WAS NEW) but it did,nt work and because it was in bank one it was causing a whole lot of problems, once removed and the system reset YES everything is ok.
LESSON: Never take new things for granted ie: to be working.

    Thanks.
