When I boot up the computer in the morning I get a black screen with a cursor. If I wait for 5 to 10 minutes then it boots into windows with no more issues.

I have tried doing a clean install of Windows 10. That seemed to clear up this issue for a month, and now it's happening again.

It started again yesterday so I did a system restore from a few days ago before this latest issue, and it's still doing it.

I honestly don't know if it's a hardware or a software issue. How should I proceed from here?

I have no idea if my video drivers are up to date. How do I get the version number to check?

If it was a problem with fast boot, why is it only cropping up now after weeks with no issues? A puzzle to me.

Your System info shows Graphics as Intel.
Funny things can happen after WU's. Neil.

How do I find out the version of graphics driver I have and which one I need as an update?

I don't see any new WU that has run just before this issue occurred. The last update was the 29th of Jan. This issue started just again yesterday.

Hi Alicia. Install the video driver from this link, Intel® HD Graphics driver for Windows* 8/8.1 (64-bit).

That version is the latest one for your CPU so it should hopefully install because there are no Windows 10 drivers available for it based on the research that I've done.

If installing the video driver makes no difference then have you installed the other drivers for your various hardware devices?

I'll install it tomorrow. Thanks. Is there a particular method of installation I should use?

The only other hardware I have is a printer. I installed the software for that after I did a clean install of Windows 10.

Are there other drivers that I should be considering?

When I tried installing the driver it says my system does not meet the requirements. When I tried the intel driver update utility it said there were no new drivers for my computer.

Please open Device Manager, expand the display adapters category, double click on your video adapter and click on the Driver tab. Post a screenshot of that tab here in your next reply.

Are there any yellow exclamation marks next to any devices in Device Manager?

Your drivers for your motherboard are located here, Gigabyte H55m-UD2H so I would make sure you install those drivers first if you haven't yet.

The problem though is some of those drivers are designed for Windows 7 so you might have mixed results with installing those drivers on a Windows 10 system.

I'm a little apprehensive about installing the motherboard driver. I'm new at this clean install business. Am I risking it not working? I don't know how to find the driver from the web link, sorry.

Well if you did a clean install of Windows 10 then it is recommended to install the drivers for your motherboard from your motherboard manufacturers website as certain hardware devices may not work properly without the proper drivers installed.

From the searching that I've done, it appears you are using the latest driver version for your video adapter even though the version that I linked to says that its compatible based on Intel's own website for some reason.

Do you have any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Choose Windows 7 64-bit on the gigabyte webpage and install the drivers from the Chipset category. Then reboot the machine after the installation completes.

Let me know if the black screen still comes up. If the long black screen delay still happens then try Performing a clean boot and see if the same behavior occurs.

Thanks for doing the research on the driver for the video adapter.

I didn't see any yellow exclamation marks by anything in device manager.

This is what I see if I go to the website you provided a link for and look under chipset, Windows 7 64Bit

    Which one do I use?

The first one I installed gave me a message that one of the application processes failed to start. The second one installed with no messages or errors. I then restarted the computer.

I will have to monitor it for a few days to see if I get the black delay screen with cursor, since it has not happened with every boot up.

    I will let you know.

    Thanks Evan.

The black screen and cursor were there is AM when I booted up. It lasted 2 minutes and then loaded windows normally.

The only other drivers for periphery that I did not update were for the speakers but they are working fine.

Ok, go ahead and perform a clean boot and see if the same thing happens. Also try unplugging all extra peripheral devices from the machine except for the power cable, monitor, mouse and keyboard and test the issue again.

I went into MSconfig. On the General Tab, the selective startup is active not the Normal startup.

I never changed the startup mode, that's weird. Shouldn't it be on Normal startup if I haven't done anything with services? None of them show as disabled

I didn't want to do anything else until I asked you about this.

That's how that selection is in Windows 10. Just disable all non Microsoft services and disable all startup programs using Task Manager and then reboot the machine.

This morning when I booted up the PC this morning, it started without any issues. It is only having the black screen and cursor some of the time. That makes it difficult to troubleshoot.

I did a clean boot anyway and it also started with no issues.

Does this symbol in notifications mean anything? Sometimes there's a circle with a line thru it and sometimes there isn't.
