I have an ASUS DRW-24F1ST DVD-RW in my system and I cannot get it to burn anything to the CD-R discs I have. I only have the Memorex brand so I'm not sure if this is due to that brand or not.

I have tried using both Windows Explorer as well as a third party app but always get the error that the disc couldn't be written to and that it may no longer be useable.

I don't know if its disc related or drive related. Oh, I've also tried to burn a DVD-R (ProDisc) and that also did not work and threw the same error.

Is there any way to check the drive to see if its bad. I have contacted my PC designer and can never get through to their tech support for help.

Thanks, Dr. but the system is less than six months old so the manufacturer will have to send me another to replace this one.

By the way, I haven't used this to record on until now so its brand new!

Just a question, does the Asus DVD player actually play a DVD/CD disc?
My wife's comp had a similar unit and it wouldn't play a disc. I checked and it wasn't showing in Disc Management.
It powered up when the comp was Started - but nothing happened when I put a disc in.
I disconnected the SATA cable from the M/B and swapped it to another SATA Port on the M/B and it worked!!!
Might be worth a look or you may have to fill in an RMA. Neil.

It will read discs fine it just refuses to write to them.

They company I bought the system from is sending out a replacement today. I'm just wondering if its a media issue. I have some TDK CD-R's coming so I'm hoping that is all it is. I use Memorex now so maybe that is the cause???

What are you trying to record and do you know if it is copywrite protected or not?

Just copying website files from a website I created myself. I'd like to have things on backup just in case....

Maybe. I had some of their CD-RWs that were junk.

Sounds like your drive's laser may be suspect.

Replacement drive arrived today and I installed it a few minutes ago. Same problem, though, nothing is burning! It has to be the media I am using, Memorex CD-R / CD-RW! I have some new TDK's coming in so I'll give those a try. Hopefully that is all there is to it!

    What a pain!

Sounds like the media are bad. A local drugstore will have them. Grab a small pack and test.

Well, I received the new TDK CD-R discs and they will also NOT burn to this drive! I called my PC maker and they suggest a complete reinstall of the OS! I called the maker of the DVD-RW, Asus, and they had me try to burn using Windows Media Player which showed any disc I put in to the burner as being FULL!

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS back to how it came from the factory then have to go through all the trouble setting all my programs and files back up! Can Windows 7 64 Pro be reinstalled WITHOUT losing any info? Anyone maybe know what file could be corrupt and causing this burner to not burn and show the media inserted is full?

I am completely lost here! This is the first time I've even attempted to use the burner since buying this system back last November.

    Any ideas would be welcomed!

    Burner: Asus DRW-24-F1ST

Hi KennyV19, I would run sfc /scannow as you seem to be missing something in the Registry or File corruption. Try and see if that corrects it otherwise a fresh install might be the only answer. Neil.

Wonder if trying another SATA cable would help here, and possibly another channel on the motherboard?

As for retaining your data (if you do a recovery/reinstall), some PC makers offer the option of preserving user data in a special folder. Toshiba is known for this, although you would have to reinstall all of your 3rd party programs. I'm assuming you have an Asus computer, but I don't know anything about their recovery options.

List your computer specs under UserCP with Speccy.

    James,
He has tried an alternate burning software that is why I feel the OS might be corrupted. Neil.

I did a reinstall of the OS and now things are working as they should. I burned a CD-R a few minutes ago using the ASUS program that came with the drive (it wasn't installed by the company I bought this system from).

All seems to be okay now!

    Thanks for the help!
