I am going to get a new internal hard drive, and I want to connect it to a desktop computer, and then use Acronis or something to migrate/clone everything over, including the OS and programs.

I suppose my first step is making sure the hardware is compatible. I have an old Gigaware internal hard drive enclosure (you can see the PDF manual for it here, although I haven't been able to find a link to the actual unit itself on amazon or anywhere else).

I want to buy this WD hard drive. My simple question: can I be sure that the hdd will fit into the enclosure? I'm not sure how old this enclosure is---not sure if anything has radically changed since then.

Of course, when everything is migrated, I would take the new hdd out of the enclosure, and replace the old one in the desktop with the new WD.

    BTW--Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Most HD for Desktops are all the same size and have been for years. Same with laptops as far as I know. Some laptops look bigger because of a bracket that has to be changed.
Connections on Desktops have changed and that is all that I know of.

No, didn't work. Both the power and data cables are shaped differently, than the hard drive's ports for them. Wish I would have known this before I bought it. Oh well.

At this point, I'm hoping I can avoid this issue and simply connect this hard drive directly to the desktop computer itself, although I'm not optimistic.

Re reading you post, I have been in hundreds of desktop PC's and none of them have an enclosure like you show. Just 2 screws on each side. Sometimes one side is hard to get to so I just use the easy side and put 2 screws in it.
The gigaware is a USB case that is external.

Size isn't the issue, its the ribbon cable.

At this point, an HP forum guru said that I should be able to simply insert the drive into the desktop itself, and then do what I need to do that way. That would be a bit more work, but on the other hand, I was going to insert this drive into the desktop anyways, so actually that wouldn't be any more work--if I can get that option to pan out.

It looks like you're attempting to install a SATA drive into an EIDE case. If you plan to put this HDD into your computer, make sure your computer accepts SATA connections. One problem I've seen with enclosed HDD cases is the reduction of airflow, so they can run hotter, usually limiting the HDD options to slower spins.
