The one on the left is an old 40 gig SATA. The cable attached to it is how it came out of the computer. It's 8 years old and failed.

The picture on the right is a representation of a new SATA that is a 500 gig drive.

What I'm trying to figure out is if the new one needs a power cable attached as insinuated in the install document. Why didn't the old one need a power cable?

The old one is a 1.5 gig transfer rate and the new one is a 6 gig transfer rate. So far the MOBO doesn't recognize the drive, and Western Digital acknowledges that some of the new drives cant be recognized in MOBOs with certain chipsets

the only issue I'd like a comment on is whether these SATAs need a power source or not

    Thanks all

Every peripheral needs power. I wonder how your old hard disk went on without the power cable. Maybe, just maybe, the power cable got disconnected from your old hard disk & it died.

I wish the image was more clear so we could see the model number of the old one.

I agree with rsinfo - the drive needs to get power from somewhere and I am not aware of any drive interface that includes power in the cable. So I think we are missing some information here and suspect that drive is missing its power cable.

So, we either need a better picture so we can read the full WD model number, or perhaps better yet, you provide the model number and a clear picture of the connector end of the drive. I bet we will see a power connector there.

I don't think so, Doc. The OP's image clearly shows a SATA cable, not IDE data or power.

IMHO, that's just a SATA cable laying close to the end of the hard drive. The pattern of the screws with that extra silver spot at a ~45 degree angle near the top left, as well as the odd design of the label that reminded me of the old WD Caviar IDE drives. I then applied a sharpen mask to the original image to help bring out the model number enough to be able to make it out ... "WD400 ".

But, in his opening post, elcajongunsfan said,
    So, what gives, elcajongunsfan?

Sorry Doc, but your reference is corrupt.. Here's a better pic. Model number is on top, and if you look on the bottom, you will see the serial ATA logo

I'm holding in my hand a WD400 serial number WMAMA6147015, that is strictly SATA. There is no IDE on the back. It does have a MOLEX receptor on the right side but also a SATA power connection on the left. AND!! on the hard drive label, is the words serial ATA..

    Thanks all

And mine was IDE. (See pic above).

But yes, yours is SATA. And you'll need power going to either the left SATA power connector, or to the right, old-style 4-pin molex connector.
